ABOUT THE ROLE An exciting opportunity exists for an Operations and Maintenance Technician – Electrical (OMT- E) to support the Seebe Group of Hydro Assets within TransAlta. This is an IBEW Union position in the Hydro operations. The OMT-E position is a multi-skilled role that performs electrical maintenance tasks as well as operating the Hydro facilities. The role includes scheduled 24-hr standby shifts on a rotational basis. This role reports to the Plant Manager,Bow Valley Operations. The role is based at Seebe (about 80km west of the City of Calgary) with travel to the generating stations on the Bow and Kananaskis Rivers. This position exists to lead and coordinate activities within a 0–3 month time span and is accountable to ensure the safe, compliant, and reliable operation and maintenance of the Seebe Hydro plants. Relocation to within 100km of Seebe is required. This role is a full-time safety sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing. This is a union position and covered under the terms of the Collective Agreement with the IBEW, Local 254. WHAT YOU WILL DO -Perform routine checks, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment, protective relaying/systems, metering and communication systems.

  • Perform high voltage switching on 13.
8 – 240KV equipment.

  • Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of work.
  • Enter notifications and give feedback and updates on preventative maintenance plans
  • Interface with Engineering, and other Internal Stakeholders
  • Assist in work scope definition and planning for work to be performed on major maintenance events
  • Maintaining competence and training to perform all work safely
  • Manually operate Hydro plants when required (start, stop and control of units)
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly routine inspections.
  • Perform isolation and restoration procedures, as governed by the Hazardous Energy Control Procedure to accommodate safe equipment maintenance.
  • Create and issue Safe to Work Permits
  • Provide 24 hr on call coverage within a continuous rotating shift schedule.
On-call responsibilities include initial plant stabilization, basic trouble shooting and repair.

  • Lead work and crews and / or contractors for routine and capital work.
  • Responsible to maintain equipment and tooling ensuring fit for use and / or service.
  • Responsible to work collaboratively with team, peers, stakeholders and support groups to ensure issues are resolved in a professional and productive manner.

  • Financial spending authority in accordance with Financial Policy WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU Required Knowledge, Certifications & Accreditations
  • Alberta or Inter-Provincial Journeyman Electrical Ticket.
Power system electrician certification or Technical Diploma may be considered.

  • High voltage switching experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver's license.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Technical knowledge of power generating assets.
  • Must be able to work safely and effectively on your own and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Basic computer skills, excel, word, etc.
  • Willing to learn, and work within all TransAlta Environmental Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
