Qualifications and Experience

Appropriate basic teacher qualifications and Ontario teaching certificate Special Education Additional Qualification Part 1 Minimum of Teaching students who are Blind/Low Vision Part 1.

Specialist preferred, or willingness to obtain Part 2 and Specialist Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following -expertise in the principles, instructional strategies, resources and technologies to best serve students with visual impairments; -thorough knowledge of digital alternate formats and related assistive technologies to support access to learning for students with visual impairments; -thorough knowledge of the Expanded Core curriculum for students who are blind or have low vision including those with multiple exceptionalities -thorough knowledge of the Unified English Braille Code (UEB) ; -thorough knowledge of Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) phases and relevant strategies.

Excellent skills in oral and written communication, computer technology, collaborative consultation and problem solving; Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the field about the implications of visual impairment and student needs; Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team to help develop and implement programs for students who are blind or have low vision; Experience developing effective IEP's; Experience in planning and implementing job-embedded professional learning with teachers; Demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimum supervision; Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in implementing, KPR's Essential Practices for Today's Learners; Demonstrated ability to participate effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team; Evidence of commitment to inclusionary practices, and demonstration of ability to embed the Board's Character Attributes and Equity and Diversity policy into daily practice; Demonstrated understanding of the Ontario Curriculum, (K-12); Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills; A valid driver's license and use of a vehicle Major Responsibilities Provide direct support for students who are blind or visually impaired to access the Ontario Curriculum Provide direct support for students who are blind or visually impaired to access the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)

Provide a range of services to students in grades K-12 who are visually impaired; Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to observe, assess and determine next steps for student learning; Assist schools in creating environmental conditions to support students who are visually impaired; Troubleshooting and supporting the use of required equipment/technology; Liaise with community agencies; assisting teachers to create effective IEP goals and strategies to support student programming; Support principles of equity and inclusionary practice in providing programming for all learners; Other duties as assigned by the Principal of Special Education Note:
Please note, that if you are a partial permeant teacher, this will not increase your FTE.

Your FTE will be a 1.0 for the duration of the term, and you will return to your original FTE at your home location, when this assignment ends.
