Job Title: Home Support Worker

The purpose of this position is to offer personalized care in a comfortable setting that respects and celebrates the uniqueness and traditions of each individual, taking into consideration their specific needs, preferences, and obstacles; with a focus on enhancing client independence and decision-making, and acknowledging the importance of continuous learning and growth to achieve this goal.
Requirements and Skills:
- Level of expertise comparable to that obtained from completing the Personal Support Worker certificate program offered at Aurora College;
- Current CPR and Standard First Aid certification;
- Basic understanding of computer operations such as charting and email usage;
- Proficiency in operating essential medical equipment for evaluating residents' health condition (e.g., thermometer, stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, etc.);
- Familiarity with universal precautions and utilization of personal protective gear (PPE);
- Understanding of proper body mechanics;
- Capability to assist residents in movements using transfer aids and lifts;
- Knowledge of various liquid consistencies and dietary requirements, and their impact on residents;
- Ability to work independently and prioritize care tasks;
- Understanding of the aging process and dementia care;
- Assistance with personal hygiene, grooming, and dressing;
- Proficiency in English language, including comprehension of health-related information;
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends;
- Understanding and upholding confidentiality;
- Appreciation of traditional healing methods and community customs;
- Proficiency in the local indigenous language is advantageous.
Typically, the aforementioned qualifications can be achieved through the successful completion of a Personal Support Worker program or equivalent certification, or a minimum of 1 year (1000 hours) of caregiving experience in long-term or home care settings, with a commitment to finishing the PSW course within 5 years of employment.
Valid driver's license required.
