Job Summary:

The After School Program Facilitator reports directly to the Program Supervisor. This position has two primary areas of responsibility - 1) providing support to immigrant and refugee children in the School's Out for Newcomer Kids Program, and 2) overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Program in collaboration with Archway colleagues, volunteers, practicum students, and community partners.

This position meets with children from Kindergarten to Grade 5, ages 6 to 12, from a wide variety of backgrounds, and provides them with after school program support.

The After School Program Facilitator plans and facilitates creative activities that connect newcomer children in-person, in the community, and in schools.


Your Role:

Archway's After School Program Facilitator with the Immigrant Youth Services Program contributes by:

  • Liaising with school staff and Archway settlement workers to identify, recruit, and register newcomer children ages 6 to 12, from Kindergarten to Grade 5, eligible for the School's Out for Newcomer Kids Program.
  • Planning and facilitating activities for children that will help them to improve their English, while focusing on social and emotional learning.
  • Planning and facilitating safe and engaging indoor or outdoor games to keep the children physically active.
  • Preparing healthy and culturally appropriate snacks, and cleaning up food preparation and eating areas.
  • Setting up and taking down furniture/items in the school room, and returning them to the condition they were in on arrival.

Meeting with parents at pick-up time to discuss child and/or family needs and makes referrals to appropriate services within the community, including services offered by Archway.


  • Creating takehome activity kits for school break times.


This position is a great fit for someone who loves working with children, has great energy, is creative, and understands the barriers faced by immigrant children new to Canada.


Our Offer:

  • Wage: $23.00 per hour
  • A parttime position at 18 hours per week, availability Mondays to Thursdays, from 12:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
  • Temporary until June 30, 2024.

Getting an Interview-you will be considered if you have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience engaging with children ages 6 to 12 from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience in providing activities for up to 15 children per group.

The Job Requires you to have:

  • Knowledge of community resources relevant to newcomer families.
  • Ability to work independently without onsite supervision.
  • Ability to speak a language other than English an asset.
  • Knowledge of common barriers immigrant children face.
  • Knowledge of the BC school system including general schedule of the year, the elementary school experience, and school structures.
  • Ability to conduct indoor and outdoor physical activities with children.
  • Ability to drive for work and the use of a personal vehicle.
  • A valid BC Driver's license and satisfactory driving record is a condition of employment.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check is a condition of employment.
  • Current Emergency First Aid with CPR/AED level C is a condition of employment.
