Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager, Volunteer Resources and Engagement the Youth Program Specialist provides regional leadership for the Step-Up Youth (SUY) volunteer program. Collaborates with the Manager to ensure services provided by youth volunteers are meeting established objectives and outcomes and are based on the three tenets of the program: Step Up and C.A.R.E., Step Up and Learn, Step Up and Lead. The Youth Program Specialist oversees staff directly assigned to the SUY program, supporting the day-to-day operations of youth volunteer programming at Island Health.

The Youth Program Specialist oversees the maintenance and administration of the youth volunteer engagement programming which supports patients/residents and clients as well as visitors and staff, including recruitment, screening, orientation, training, supervision, and evaluation of volunteers. Additionally, the Youth Program Specialist collaborates with team members on site specific youth program implementation across the Island Health region and is responsible for developing and maintaining strong working relationships with key partners, stakeholders, and local community agencies.

Travel will be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training And Experience

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Child and Youth Care, Health Sciences, Education, Social Sciences or related field. A minimum of three years of recent related experience and experience as a volunteer.

Valid BC Driver's License.

Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrated administration and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated Human Resource Coordination skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment, plan, and organize.
  • Demonstrated experience working with youth ages
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and leading youth activities.
  • Experience supporting volunteers or volunteer teams is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience as a volunteer is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to respond diplomatically to both internal and external inquiries.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance and direction to others.
  • Solid understanding of the Volunteer Management Cycle.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a cooperative and supportive manner.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people and personalities and to provide motivation and encouragement to volunteers.
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision. Demonstrated ability to productively use a computer and technology.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Access to a vehicle is required for this position. Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed, to support youth after school and on weekends from time to time.
