You can expect new challenges, a safety-focused work environment, paid training, and supportive colleagues who share your enthusiasm for movement.

Conductors work as part of train crews, handling the movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives in rail yards and on the road.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing and receiving instructions about the movement and placement of rail cars
  • Assembling and dismantling trains in the rail yard, picking up and setting off rail cars en-route
  • Operating track switches to change locomotive and rail car routes
  • Communicating effectively with various departments via handheld radio

Training:

  • Successful applicants will undergo an 11-week paid training program (7 weeks in the classroom at CN Campus in Winnipeg, MB, and 4 weeks of field training).

After the initial training, candidates will complete a minimum of 45 trips to enhance their skills.

Successful completion of the training program is mandatory, including written exams and field training.

Key requirements:

  • Working a flexible schedule with regular attendance
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Meeting medical fitness requirements
  • Writing and passing safety and rules exams

Assets:

  • Completion of college or vocational/technical school
  • Relevant work experience
  • Valid driver's license
