Position Summary


Are you someone who has a real passion for helping others? Follow the path to an exciting career as a Health Care Assistant at University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC).


  • Under the direction of the Manger (or designate) & RN/RPN's the Mental Health Support Worker will provide assistance to patients with acute mental illness and substance use disorders. They will provide support as directed by the care plan utilizing psychosocial rehabilitation principles in all care aspects.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work:

Days, Evenings - 07:00 to 15:00, 14:45 to 22:45,rotating
University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) is the largest acute care facility (268 beds) in Northern Health and is the hub for specialized health services.

It is a full service hospital and home to a new cancer centre for Northern BC, including a wide range of cancer treatments.

Provides undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia.

UHNBC is also a key clinical education site for nursing and many health sciences students at UNBC, the College of New Caledonia, BCIT and other institutions.
Prince George has a population of 89, local residents and is a service centre for approximately 320,000.

Qualifications

  • Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Nursing Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training or experience.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver's license.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of Mental Health Act and other relevant legislation, psychiatric disorders, medications and side effects, and psychosocial rehabilitation principles
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients including conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to operate related equipment/instruments (i.e. lifts, blood pressure monitors, iPad)
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize duties and responsibilities
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
