Squamish Nation consists of 23 villages and is comprised of descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal people who live in the present-day Greater Vancouver area, Gibson's Landing, and Squamish River watershed.

The Squamish Nation has occupied and governed the territory since beyond recorded history. The Squamish Nation's culture is rich and resilient. As an organization, we provide support to the greater Squamish Nation Community through service. With 12 departments with individual areas of expertise, we ensure Community Members have access to necessary programs and services.

About The Opportunity:


Working as an integral part of the Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ Rights and Title Department, reporting directly to Senior Natural Resources Specialist, the Squamish Valley (SV) Fish Guardian is responsible for monitoring fishing and harvesting activities within the Squamish Valley area.

The Squamish Valley Fish Guardian will understand Sḵwx̱wú7mesh traditional teachings, have a strong connection to the outdoors, and a passion for fisheries-related topics.

Squamish Valley Fish Guardians protect Squamish Nation's fish harvesting rights for food, social and ceremonial purposes. They act as seasonal river monitors, looking after fishery resources and habitat, and uphold the Squamish Nation Fishing Bylaws. The Squamish Valley Fish Guardians work from June to October.

Fish Guardians typically work in pairs of 2, providing education to fishers, mentoring youth, and documenting and reporting fisheries-related incidents.

This role is mainly field-based with some office coordination as required. Daily shifts entail regular land patrols along areas like the Squamish, Cheakamus, Cheekeye, and Sta7mes Rivers.

This role is field-based during the fishing season; Guardians must hold a driver's license, operate 4x4 trucks, and be physically fit and able to work outside for long periods of time in all weather conditions.

Fish Guardians will maintain daily communication with, and report to, the Senior Natural Resources Specialist. The SV Fish Guardians may also be involved in planning, monitoring, and response initiatives as required. Guardians may be required to take training related to safety and environmental monitoring.

What You Bring:

  • Combination of education and experience.
  • Teamoriented with a positive, approachable attitude. Ability to relate with others and deliver negative information tactfully and peacefully when required.
  • High level of emotional intelligence, patience, integrity, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of local salmon species life cycles and strong fish identification skills.
  • Ability to transcribe fish harvest data, total fish numbers, temperature, and river level onto daily report forms.
  • Knowledge of Squamish Nation Fisheries Bylaws.
  • Can lift 50 pounds and is physically able to perform onsite duties as required.

Salary:
$25.68 per hour.
