TQRs:

  • MSW degree or equivalent.
  • At least 4 years of demonstrated research or practice experience working in the area of refugees.
  • Familiarity with Canadian refugee policy, history, and the evolving response to refugees as well as the various contexts for the refugee populations with whom students are working.
  • Theorygrounded practice with refugees, including community organizing and direct service delivery to individuals and families.
  • Multiple conceptualizations of "refugee"; the international experience before arrival in Canada; cultural adjustment; culture shock; traumatic stress; and war and refugee trauma.
  • Issues related to "special groups," including but not limited to: survivors of torture, detainees, and refugee claimants. Special attention will be paid to family issues, intergroup conflicts, and intergenerational issues.
  • The role social workers can play in the fight against antiimmigrant policies, sanctions, and discriminatory practices.
  • Macro perspectives on immigration, including immigration trends and policies as they influence the lives of immigrants and service delivery, and as a source of professional ethical dilemmas.
  • Experiences and issues common to most refugees, including the multiple and complex adjustments associated with movement from one culture to another and the process of acculturation.
  • Knowledge of refugeegenerating conflicts and subsequent international responses.
