Department summary


Facilities and Operations is a diverse envelope of services that is responsible for managing the buildings across our five campuses.

Facilities and Operations manages capital construction and renovations, providing utilities and energy management to delivering student and campus services.

Facilities and Operations works behind the scenes to make the university one of the top places in the world to study, live and work in.

The Asset Management & Operations portfolio supports our community through operating, maintaining and renewing our infrastructure and providing a number of safety and security services.


The Trades, Infrastructure & Maintenance team within Asset Management & Operations includes staff who are responsible for the careful practice of construction, repairs, and scheduled maintenance of campus facilities.

Trades staff are an essential contributor to the safe and efficient functioning of the university.

Position summary


A plumber or pipefitter working on campus installs and maintains all mechanical equipment and services, does fabrication, builds mechanical piping and equipment, and completes testing.

The position requires extensive knowledge in the installation and maintenance of plumbing and drainage systems, steam and condensate distribution systems, domestic hot and cold water systems, natural gas and propane systems, medical gas systems, air, vacuum and other lab services.

In addition, this position is also responsible for heating fluid systems including but not limited to glycol, hot water, steam, and cooling systems including but not limited to chilled water, brine, distilled and demineralized water systems.

A journeyman plumber or pipefitter installs and maintains all underground, concealed and exposed service distribution lines, necessary to provide services to all labs, public facilities, machine rooms, service corridors, equipment, including interior and exterior building services, irrigation pods, and livestock equipment

Duties

  • Inspecting, testing, troubleshooting of piping systems such as specialized water systems, natural gas, propane, and medical gases
  • Responsible for updating work orders on AIM
  • Piping systems include heating, cooling, plumbing, drainage, steam, condensate, domestic water, laboratory services, and their components
  • Servicing other hazardous products and their components on a regular basis
  • Assisting with mechanical design
  • Responsible for material takeoffs, ordering and receiving material, layout and assembly of piping and components, and testing of the completed assembly
  • Isolating & depressurizing piping systems such as steam, natural gas, water, etc. for maintenance activities
  • Responsible for putting systems back into operation after the work has been completed
  • Performs preventative maintenance on specialized equipment that is legislated by the government Preventative maintenance will include backflow prevention, eyewash/safety showers, and pressure vessel inspections
  • Providing field direction, supervision, and education to plumbing, steamfitting, and gasfitting apprentices, newly hired Journeymen, maintenance workers, and other trades personnel
  • Responsible for conveying proper work ethics, following correct procedures when performing tasks, and guiding apprentices toward the satisfactory completion of the apprenticeship program and certification
