Community Kitchen Coordinator

London, Ontario, Canada Sanctuary London Full time
The Community Kitchen Coordinator is a dynamic and extremely challenging position.

It requires someone with great f
lexibility, patience, teamwork, leadership, organizational skills, and communication skills. They will be responsible for meal planning, grocery shopping, and leading a team of volunteers and community members in cooking community meals weekly for Sanctuary.

They will also participate in weekly staff meetings, and weekly drop-in lunches.

Sanctuary is a not-for-profit charitable organization which receives no government funding. As such all staff must participate in raising funds for the organization. For the Community Kitchen Coordinator this may mean that they are called upon to help with fundraising events. May also be called upon to help with food planning and preparation for quarterly Community Celebration Events

The most important thing to know about this job is that you are responsible for cooking a hearty and healthy meal for 250+ people each week (with the help of volunteers).

But while the meal is important, what is even more important is the community members themselves.

We want the kitchen to be a welcoming space where community members who come from all sorts of different backgrounds, many of which may be vulnerable, are invited in to participate in creating the meal WITH us.

We are a community that desires, as much as possible, to do things (including cooking) WITH our community, not FOR our community.

This is a very challenging tension to maintain, but an important one. You will be a cook, but more important than that, you will be a community-maker.

We are a unique team, and hope that you will fit in with us as teamwork and healthy communication are very important to us.

Required skills:
You must have a valid driver's license

Access to a vehicle on Tuesdays for groceries and donations pick-up

Willing to complete Safe Food Handlers Certification

Willing to complete Advanced First Aid and CPR Certification

Must be able to maintain a budget.

Will be responsible for maintaining the kitchen according to expectations/direction from the London-Middlesex Health Unit.

This means keeping all food safe when preparing and storing plus recording temperatures of the fridges, freezers and dishwasher and other duties under the LMHU guidelines.

Experience working in a kitchen, meal planning is an asset.

Experience in working with vulnerable populations will be an asset. Familiarity/experience volunteering with the Sanctuary London community is a significant plus

Outline of duties:

Mondays 6 hours:
consists of staff meetings from 9 -11 am & lunch drop-in from 11 am - 3 pm

Tuesdays 6 hours:
consists of meal planning, food donation pick-ups, grocery shopping, kitchen organization & other duties as required (start & end times to be confirmed)

Wednesdays 8 hours:
consists of cooking/meal prep from 1-5:30 pm, community care/connection from 5:30-7pm (while eating with our community members) and kitchen clean up from 7-9 pm

Sanctuary is a growing organization, and there may be room for this role to be expanded with increased hours in the future.

About Sanctuary:
At Sanctuary, we are becoming a healthy, welcoming community where people who are poor or excluded are particularly valued. This community is an expression of the good news embodied in Jesus Christ.

Our faith and relationship with God inform us in identifying the following as some of our core values:

Dignity:

We believe that each person is created in the image of God and, as such, has the right to be treated with the utmost dignity.

Mutuality:

We come to our relationships recognizing that each person has gifts to be shared and gifts to be received.

Inclusivity:
We intend that our community at Sanctuary will be as inclusive as Jesus was in his life.

Simply put, Sanctuary is a diverse community of beautiful and broken people seeking to create meaningful and uplifting connections with one another.

In this way, we begin to find and create a sense of 'home' and 'belonging' together. Over the years we have learned that this can be challenging, complicated, and extremely messy. We find that it is also enlivening, fulfilling and deeply meaningful.

Sanctuary is a freeing place to work.

While accountable to each other, we have a lot of autonomy to manage our own schedules and workflow, because we trust one another.

We each have a deep commitment to this community, as well as to our roles within it.

Each of our team, regardless of their unique focus within the community of Sanctuary, is committed to viewing ourselves first and foremost as members of the community.

And while still being committed to fulfilling their specific role to the very best of their ability, their engagement with the Sanctuary community takes precedence over the duties of their role.

By joining us you will become an important part of our close-knit community. We hope that you will feel at home here, that you will be with us for the long haul.

You will succeed
