Alberta Ballet is seeking experienced contemporary dance teachers to join our instructional team in Edmonton for Fall 2024. This position will be part-time hourly term contract.

Schedule:

  • Weekday evenings, Saturday daytime hours
  • Summer (July / August) summer camp and sessional classes daytime hours

Purpose:
Dance Teachers provide instruction on contemporary dance techniques within our Community class programming.

Key Deliverables

Instructional Duties*
  • Structure and teach contemporary dance classes.
  • Teaching contemporary dance from a strong, technical foundation to students at a variety of senior levels. Maintain appropriate staff/student relationships.
  • Attend demonstrations as needed.
  • Produce written assessments on student progress.
  • Record and report on student attendance.
  • Communicate with parents of students as required and take notes of conversations with parents.

Non-Instructional Duties

  • Assist the school and students with photo days.
  • Attend/Supervise rehearsals and performances which include the students.
  • Attend Year-End Performance (YEP), rehearsals/performances if performances coincide within the period of instruction.

Qualifications & Key Competencies

  • Experience teaching a wide range of levels from six (6) years of age to adults.
  • Experience as a Dance Teacher with established contemporary training techniques and modalities.
  • Proactive and flexible approach to work, willing to be involved in all areas of the organization's dance initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build good supportive relationships with students, colleagues, and the wider dance community.
  • First aid training would be an asset.
  • Flexible attitude towards duties and schedules to fulfill the requirements of the role.
  • Empathy with and a commitment to the aims and ethics of the organization.
  • Knowledge of repertoire from the contemporary dance world, as well as an ability to prepare choreographed dances.
  • Computer skills with experience using Office365 (outlook, excel, word, SharePoint)

Working Conditions / physical requirements

  • This job is performed at the school in a variety of settings.
  • Teaching standing for extended periods of time, repetitive movements, Demonstrating Dance
  • Speaking for extended periods of time, voice and speech indicating tempo, rhythm, and quality
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching.
  • Employees are expected to comply with all safety regulations.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record and vulnerable sectors check
