Position Summary:


The Lead Food Scientist at the Food Innovation and Research Studio (FIRSt) works with colleagues to assess feasibility of projects, and primarily develops, plans and conducts applied research projects.

The Lead Food Scientist provides technical expertise for FIRSt's clients, with a specific focus on food chemistry, food processing, market research, prototype development and large-scale commercialization.


Key responsibilities:

  • Gives technical expertise and consultative knowledge to proposals and projects in the areas of concept framework, ingredient functionality, analytical recommendations, sensory analysis and appropriate technology.
  • Offers technical support within the research team relating to relevant equipment, Genesis database, third party laboratory testing arrangements, and nutritional labelling.
  • Teaches and mentors students relating to the scientific research approach; project design considerations; systematic research planning; report writing, client management; food science quality considerations; food safety principles.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Fouryear degree or equivalent from a recognized postsecondary institution in Food Science.
  • Minimum eight years handson formulation and product development experience in consumerpackaged goods (CPG), including handson experience working in food manufacturing pilot plants and facilities.
  • Ability to perform and document plant scale trials / formulations and experience with food quality control / qualify assurance systems and knowledge of standard laboratory testing (pH, Titratable Acidity, Aw, Brix, viscosity, consistency and moisture).
  • Hands on experience with pilot scale prototype development and experience over a broad range of food products is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience guiding others (i.e., mentoring and coaching).

  • Selfstarter with strong logístical and organizational skills; must be able to manage multiple projects with exceptional accuracy; good judgement and decisionmaking ability.
  • Open to new ideas, innovative and work with high integrity and trust. Demonstrated creativity in work history and demonstrated ability to keep current in the field and learn new information quickly.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and problemsolving skills including the ability to plan and forecast.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, teamwork, and people skills.
  • Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience, and styles.
  • Ability to lift between 20 kg and 44 lbs (i.e., grocery shopping, bulk ingredients, small equipment, and appliances).

Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
