Inspector, Coal - Field Operations, South – Hybrid

The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) ensures the safe, efficient, orderly, and environmentally responsible development of oil, natural gas, and coal resources over their entire life cycle.

The AER's Regulatory Compliance branch is currently recruiting for an Inspector to join our team in the Field Operations, South team. This position will be responsible for a variety of compliance assurance activities including field inspections, incident response, and licensee education activities, etc. with a focus on spill/historical contamination remediation and waste facilities. This role may also include other inspection capacities based on the needs of the team. The successful candidate will also be responding to incidents, stakeholder complaints, and will participate in the 24 hour on-call rotation.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Lead and independently conduct complex inspections on operations/activities within the AER's jurisdiction. Prepare an inspection plan, then collect and analyze information from varied sources to determine compliance. Resolve problems and make recommendations to improve environmental practices. Prepare letters and inspection reports. Perform follow up action as required.
  • Provide timely field response for incidents related to mining activities.
  • Support the team in other planning and reporting activities in alignment with AER policies, procedures, the Compliance Assurance Program, and Branch Operational Plan.
  • Respond to calls on the 24 hour emergency response/complaint line as part of a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Lead meetings and deliver technical presentations to industry and government agencies.
  • Support provincial teams and assist when needed to develop proactive inspection programs. Share the information between provincial teams and field centre teams. Assist and/or train and mentor other staff as needed.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures including completion of field level hazard assessments, following personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols, conducting bump testing and calibration of gas monitors, following safe driving practices, collaborating with the health & safety team, understanding and following best practices when acting as a lone worker in dealing with public interactions and concerned stakeholders.
  • Contribute to provincial initiatives or assignments related to operational needs, regulatory, and technical issues as appropriate. Participate in technical teams to develop and implement policies and procedures. Act as a subject matter expert, providing support to hearings or ADR sessions as required.

What we're looking for in you:

  • Post-secondary in engineering, environmental sciences or other related education.
  • 6+ years directly related experience in spill remediation with regulatory, field operations, or other related experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • 2+ years directly related experience in mining Water Act and EPEA regulatory work, mining operations, or other related experience.
  • Applicable regulatory knowledge ( Remediation Guidelines (Alberta Tier 1 Soil and Groundwater), Alberta Environmental and Protection Enhancement Act (AEPA), Oil and Gas Conservation Act (OGCA), Alberta Site Assessment Standard) is considered an asset.
  • Intermediate experience of Microsoft Office products.
  • Software experience with Field Inspection System (FIS), OneStop, Compliance and Operations Management (COM), and the Contamination Management and Risk Tracker (CMaRT) would be an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make independent decisions and exercise sound judgement.
  • Strong communication skills; written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.

Additional Information:

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
  • Pre-placement Medical is required. Must be able to conduct typical Oil & Gas field work, including driving prolonged distances, climbing stairs, ladders, etc., walking around industrial sites, into remote locations, and ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver's license along with a positive driving record.
  • This position will be approximately 25% field work and 75% hybrid office work. Some overnight travel may be required on occasion (several times/year).
  • This is a permanent position located in West Central Alberta with preference for Hinton/Edson/Drayton Valley area applicants. Other similar locations may be considered.
  • Must participate in a 24 hour on-call rotation and respond to incidents as required.
