Job Summary

The Building Services Supervisor trains, coordinates and supervises the work of housekeeping staff, utility workers, and service workers.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Building Services Managers and the Associate Director, Building Services within Student Housing and Community Services.

Work Performed

  • Prepares and assigns work schedules and assignments for Housekeepers, Assistant Housekeeping Supervisors, Utility Workers, and Service Workers. Supervises work performed to ensure efficient and effective custodial service to meet departmental and facility needs. Works with staff to improve efficiency and effectiveness, and reports performance issues to management.
  • Conducts area inspections to evaluate cleanliness levels and ensure all work meets departmental standards. Follows up on identified problems and complaints, and submits requests for repair or maintenance as required. Prepares reports on findings.
  • Responsible for orientating and training new employees. Provides training to new employees in equipment and product usage.
  • Checks and reports inventory requirements, and checks stocks of supplies on a regular basis. Submits written requests for replacement to management staff in sufficient time to avoid any work holdup.
  • Checks for vacated rooms on database and ensures that vacated rooms in assigned area are made up and inspected as soon as possible. Follows standard updating procedures on hotel and student databases.
  • Ensures safety measures are adhered to by conducting regularly scheduled safety observations, providing feedback and follow up to staff, and providing re-training as needed.
  • Records and stores lost and found items as per established procedures.
  • Ensures a high level of customer service is delivered at all times to UBC residents, staff, and guests.
  • Participates in related day to day office administrative duties, such as, answering telephones, record keeping, filing, data entry, performing basic calculations, typing correspondence, inventory, and month end procedures. Completes payroll timesheets and ensures they are submitted by established deadlines.
  • Oversees and coordinates special housekeeping project work, such as floor care, carpet cleaning, or other cleaning projects as assigned.
  • Ensures master key sets are kept secured; provides room access as required using master keys.
  • Relieves or assists staff as required.
  • Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement


This position provides direction to staff in order to provide quality services to the campus, Student Housing and Community Services, clients, and National and International conferences.

Inappropriate scheduling and assessment of work performed by staff could have a negative impact on customers and could result in customer service complaints and loss of revenue.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Supervision Given

Assigns, trains, and monitors the work of Housekeepers, Assistant Housekeeping Supervisors, Utility Workers and Service Workers.

Minimum Qualifications


Graduation from a technical school in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a APPA certificate.
  • Previous experience supervising a staff team in a unionized environment.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and safe driving record.
  • Computer experience, including proficiency of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, and Excel).
  • Effective oral and written communication, leadership, interpersonal and time management skills. Thorough knowledge of building services procedures and practices.
