  • Located in Barrie and reporting to the Associate Dean, the incumbent will provide expert technical support to the oral health programs in matters of a complex nature requiring a high degree of independent judgment, technical specialization and experience.
  • The incumbent will demonstrate, supervise, and provide input into the student assessment process to the faculty lead on observed skills in preclinics, clinics, open labs and practical lab. The incumbent will assist students meet program practice course learning outcomes in their clinical experiences. The incumbent will liaise with the Program Coordinator and clinical faculty lead to discuss student progress, equity of student experience, and liaise with the Quality Assurance Monitor and clinical lead faculty for calibration of clinical processes.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing students with appropriate learning experiences to assist them in meeting the course learning outcomes in their preclinical, clinical, clientcare, community and lab experiences (clinical)
  • Liaising and consulting regularly with faculty to facilitate effective integration of theory with practice and achievement of expected outcomes
  • Providing orientation for students to the clinical environment, the respective policies and procedures, and equipment used in the provision of Denturism services
  • Providing input into the evaluation process, both formative and summative, using a lab/clinic assessment tool developed by faculty, on observed students' Denturism knowledge, skills and attitudes by using established forms
  • Providing regular feedback, to students and the lead faculty about the students' performance
  • Supervising and monitoring students in the delivery of clientcare, while reinforcing the development of professional knowledge, skills and attitudes
  • Providing students with the clarification, guidance, advising and feedback on their skills related to the Denturism process of care through clear and consistent communication both written and verbal
  • Demonstrating clinical expertise and professional role modeling
  • Tracking student performance of clinical and lab skills for use by lead faculty
  • Making recommendations for student remediation
  • Attending meetings and calibrating with peers, staff, and faculty of clinical processes and skill demonstrations
  • Auditing and ensuring professional standards of care, and health and safety standards and procedures are being followed by students and staff
  • Discussing student issues/concerns such as client management, clinical permit validity, and student absence, and referring more complex or academic issues to the faculty lead or program coordinator
  • This position will primarily support the Denturism program; however, incumbents will also be assigned to the oral health programs based on semester activity and as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successfully completed a 3year diploma in Denturism
  • BCLS certified
  • Must possess at least 5 years experience as a dental professional with at least 3 of those years as a Registered Denturist
  • Minimum of one year of clinical assessment in a postsecondary education environment. Experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, and complex health histories and oral health needs.
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Denturists of Ontario (CDO)
  • Training in educational theory and methodology an asset
  • Clinical education and practice as a Dental Assistant an asset
  • Ability to work nontraditional hours including evening and weekends as required
  • Experience in and willingness to work in an offsite placement and/or community outreach
  • Computer skills experience using the Microsoft Office Suite, Blackboard, and Axium Dental Software
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety regulations and protocols according to professional standards and ability to practice according to the CDO Standards of Practice and practice guidelines
  • Interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills with the ability to handle requests and problems with diplomacy;
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective team member
  • Ability to take direction and execute instructions
  • Organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet multiple and conflicting deadlines which demonstrating a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the profession
  • Provide clinical coverage if needed
  • Required to meet Clinical Preparedness Permit/Attestation Declaration
