Manager, External Relations

Job Description:
As a member of the organization's Public Affairs team, this position will report to the Senior Manager of External Relations, and will work to effectively communicate the organization's priorities to external audiences.
Responsibilities:
- Member of the Public Affairs team, responsible for driving reputation protection and enhancement for both Extendicare and ParaMed Home Health Care
- Act as a strategic advisor, and earn a reputation as a trusted and collaborative communications manager, to advance external awareness of Extendicare's work to
- Improve Care, Every Day
- Evolve proactive storytelling and thought leadership strategies, using qualitative and quantitative insights to demonstrate continuous improvement
- Build on existing relationships with media and foster new connections
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with teams and leaders across the organization, responding to individual needs while balancing organizational priorities
- Provide expert media advice and counsel to internal teams, forecast and analyze emerging issues
- Provide expert media counsel to internal teams, including appropriate training and preparation to successfully position for the organization's spokespeople
- Write and edit public affairs materials, including: briefing notes, opeds, articles for publication, speeches and presentations
Requirements:
- Postsecondary degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related discipline combined with experience
- Minimum five to seven years progressive external communications experience. Experience managing a team is an asset
- Experience in media relations, ideally with knowledge of Canadian health care reporting
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to present information clearly and effectively
- Experience advancing social media strategies to grow audience communities and improve engagement
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Experience leveraging data to report on how communications strategies perform and using metrics to inform their evolution
- Creative, innovative thinker who challenges the statusquo
- Ability to quickly shift priorities, manage competing timelines and be relentless in getting the job done
- Ability to focus action on what is pertinent to the organization through an understanding of key organizational, health sector and political issues
- Proven experience in taking personal responsibility for seeking information from various sources
- Superb organization, planning, time management and an ability to manage competing priorities in a fastpaced environment
- Maintain curiosity, positivity and an ongoing desire to learn and try new things in an environment of consistent improvement and innovation
