Position Summary

BCIT's School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Assistant Instructor, Fish, Wildlife and Recreation.

The Fish, Wildlife and Recreation (FWR) program is a practical two-year diploma that is part of the Renewable Resources Department at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology). The FWR program is designed to give students a broad range of applied skills, experiences, and knowledge for careers in the dynamic and diverse field of natural resource management and stewardship. The program provides learning opportunities for students to identify, inventory, and monitor fish and wildlife species in British Columbia and the habitats they use and explore parks and protected areas and their management in the province. Duties & Responsibilities The program is seeking an Assistant Instructor to assist in the delivery of a range of courses within the FWR diploma programs and others as required.

Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate we are seeking will have a combination of the following:

Minimum Qualifications:
Diploma in fisheries, wildlife, ecology, or related discipline. Minimum 3 years of recent field experience in the combined areas of environmental monitoring, fish and wildlife, and parks and recreation related work. Recent specific experience with different fish collection, wildlife inventory, and habitat assessment methods Demonstrated recent experience with a range of equipment used to assess terrestrial and aquatic parameters in the field (e.g., water quality meters, telemetry equipment, wildlife cameras, wildlife acoustic monitoring). Familiarity with and ability to include multiple knowledge sources and perspectives as it relates to course content, in particular engaging relevant Indigenous knowledge-holders, and land stewards. Experience with assisting with marking and supporting student learning in classroom, field, and on-line settings, including familiarity with online learning management systems. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including experience working with multiple and diverse partners and resolving conflict. Demonstrated ability to work in a team, being flexible and adaptable to meet the needs and challenges of a dynamic and evolving program. Physically able to lead groups of students on moderately challenging outdoor related field activities that may involve several consecutive days and overnight trips. Experience developing and implementing field safety plans for field-based and on-campus teaching environments. Valid Class 5 Driver's License. The successful applicant must obtain a Class 4 license within their first year at BCIT as a condition of employment if they do not already hold one. Preferred Qualifications: Relevant professional designation in the field of biology, ecological restoration, etc. (e.g., RBTech, RP Bio) BC WorkSafe Approved Electrofishing Certification with at least 3 years of demonstrable recent field experience. Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) certification Experience operating boats for research, teaching, or other non-pleasure purposes. Experience working with GPS equipment & software, as well as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) applications and related software. Examples include: ESRI ArcGIS suite, Trimble Pathfinder Office, QGIS, Avenza, Road Eng, etc. Familiarity with the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) expectations and guidelines when handling animals. Experience with Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (a.k.a. "drones"). Training in instructional skills (e.g., PIDP (Provincial Instructor Diploma Program), completed instructional skills workshop, etc.).
