The opportunity:


The Vice-President (Research and International) through its Partnerships and Innovation Office is spearheading the creation of University of Manitoba's entrepreneurship hub, IdeaStart, which is a high-profile entrepreneurial gateway at the confluence of disciplines to promote entrepreneurship, innovation and knowledge mobilization on the University of Manitoba campuses, providing a unified entry point for the whole university community and beyond.

The IdeaStart program will enable innovators and entrepreneurs of all interests and skill-levels to explore, build and scale their next project or venture.

Students and staff can initiate their own projects or contribute to existing ventures involving faculty, business, and community partners.


The Manager will be responsible for the planning, program development, stakeholder relationships, and implementation of all phases of development of the University of Manitoba's entrepreneurship hub, IdeaStart.

The incumbent will be responsible for identifying and nurturing the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, and facilitate the development of a globally recognized entrepreneurship program and ecosystem linking entrepreneurial talent, researchers, scholars, innovators, existing entrepreneurial capacity, incubators, maker spaces and corporate partnerships.

As integral part of the IdeaStart program, the manager will provide guidance to innovators and entrepreneurs that seek to deploy and/or commercialize their ideas and to facilitate relevant next steps outside of the University of Manitoba's entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem.


The qualifications and experience we're looking for:

  • Post-secondary degree in business, management, entrepreneurship, engineering, or related field required.
  • Master's degree (MBA) preferred.
  • A minimum of five years' demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of strategic plans and programs.
  • Experience as a founder, innovator, or executive, with a strong understanding of entrepreneurial success factors.
  • Experience working in the entrepreneurship ecosystem is required.
  • Experience working as a consultant or advisor to startup companies required.
  • Experience working in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship support at a level suitable to facilitate credibility and positive relations with staff, post docs, students, alumni and external partners preferred.
  • Project management experience in delivering a highquality education and professional development programs preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Strong leadership skills required.
  • Welldeveloped analytical, interpretive and evaluation skills complemented by a creative and entrepreneurial approach is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and other software's is required.
  • Excellent problem analysis and solving skills required.
  • Superior interpersonal, management, and organizational skills required.
  • Research and market analysis skills required.
  • A high degree of tact, diplomacy, discretion and professionalism is required.
  • The ability to create a respectful workplace, able to motivate and mentor staff is required.
  • A deep understanding of the innovation ecosystem, and the ability to connect clients to the appropriate entrepreneurial resources based on their stage in the process is required.
  • Ability to conceive, plan and own operational delivery strategies over multiple years to deliver near mid
- and longer-term is required.

  • The ability to analyse and evaluate ventures; proficiency with financial modelling, conducting market analysis, and strategic planning are considered assets.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the diverse nature of the university research community and of the issues (financial, ethical) surrounding privatepublic sector partnerships.
  • Thorough knowledge of University regulations and policies.
