Position Summary:


The Library Web Support Consultant supports the effective delivery of library technologies on the McGill campus by solving problems with online systems, ensuring that they are user-centred, accessible, and conformant to McGill standards.

The incumbent provides training and manages documentation, usage statistics, and accounts for library systems. The incumbent also contributes to the deployment and effective operation of the Library's technology resources.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide firsttier support to staff using select Librarymanaged online systems. Troubleshoot technical and access issues and escalate when necessary.
  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) tasks on Library systems implementations and upgrades. Document software issues and technical problems encountered and collaborate with the Library Application Development Team for resolution.
  • Create and maintain system documentation for select Librarymanaged online systems, including describing technologies used, documenting integrations with other systems, and writing usage guidelines.
  • Create, implement, and maintain procedures for the provisioning, deprovisioning, and permissions management of local accounts in Librarymanaged online systems. Coordinate the execution of these procedures with other onboarding and offboarding processes in different units in the Library.
  • Participate in the design, execution, and evaluation of user tests to ensure Library technologies and online systems best meet user needs.
  • Support the implementation of McGill Digital Standards in both McGill's Web Management System (WMS) and thirdparty software used by the Library.
  • Participate in the design, execution, and evaluation of training of library staff on the use of Librarymanaged online systems.
  • Research and recommend software for staff and public computing based on identified needs. Manage software license and deployment and maintain accurate inventory.
  • Collect, retrieve, and analyze usage statistics for Library software, hardware, and web systems.
  • Perform selection, maintenance, repair, and vendor relations for other Library technical equipment for staff and public use (e.g., scanners, selfcheck machines, display screens).
  • Provide support and troubleshooting on library equipment and maintain documentation on equipment.
  • Obtain pricing and quotes, research suppliers, and prepare recommendations for technology purchase and management.
  • Continually acquire new knowledge and update skills related to technology in libraries.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
DEC in Computer Science Technology or Multimedia Integration is preferred.


Must have demonstrated knowledge of web management systems such as Drupal and familiarity with web standards such as HTML5 and WCAG 2.0.

Exceptional attention to detail with a proven ability to manage, integrate, communicate, update, and document changing information.

High degree of flexibility and organization to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously, with the ability to prioritize and meet strict deadlines.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with online systems. Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, with the ability to work with clients of a variety of backgrounds. Experience with troubleshooting common hardware
- and software-related issues. Must be able to work independently and as a member of teams and follow through with mínimal direction. Ability to learn about new systems and software independently (e.g., Springshare, Confluence).Knowledge of CSS and web design experience are desirable. Knowledge of project management principles and practices are an asset. Strong organizational, verbal/written communications and interpersonal skills; must be able to explain and demonstrate technical concepts to clients in a way that is both engaging and inclusive. Knowledge of French is an asset.


Physical ability to occasionally lift and carry equipment (e.g., computers, monitors, screens) without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.) and with assistance up to 34 kg (75 lbs.).
