Seasonal / On-call Kid's Self Defense Instructor

Sumera is looking for an experienced, caring, and safe kid's Self Defense instructor for her annual Free Youth Dance & Safety Event Series which will run in the Spring (May to June) and in the Fall (September to October)

The instructor may support up to 8 self-defense classes for 2024.

A note from Sumera, "We are not a gym, community center, or dance studio. We are a community-based organization that offers seasonal programs across Bloor since 2014. We place emphasis on running free physical activities for kids and youth living in at-risk communities across Toronto. Our annual dance and safety event operates in under-resourced communities and will have up to 20 participants per class.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructs a 75minute streetstyle selfdefense session that is fun, safe, and effective for kids/youth with no selfdefense experience
  • Instructs a safe beginnerfriendly self defense curriculum for kids/youth ages 7 to 18 years old
  • Must discuss situational awareness and teach escapes from common attacks that are relevant to the groups (girls only, small kids, teens)
  • Is comfortable supporting groups living in communities with high gun violence rates
  • Is comfortable instructing community classes in a school, nonprofit center, kids club
  • Must be comfortable instructing a kid's class size of up to 20
  • Can explain drills and games safely and effectively to kids (to reduce injuries)
  • Has worked with vulnerable kids (atrisk, newcomers with a refugee background)
  • Can commute easily to West Toronto, York, Etobicoke and Scarborough areas
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience teaching selfdefense classes
  • Shows compassion for kid's with special needs
  • Able to lift up to 10 lb and can arrange a space (push tables and chairs to the side)
  • Shows up 10 minutes before and ends on time
  • Open to receiving regular feedback in person and via phone
  • Able to communicate all issues and concerns in a timely manner by phone and inperson (being late, cancellations, issues, etc)
  • Shows professionalism at all times and upholds our code of ethics
  • Agrees not to promote themselves, their classes/services or other companies in class
  • Must have a valid CPR and First Aid certificate
  • Must have a clear Police Check (Vulnerable Sector Check)

Assets

  • Has valid commercial liability insurance in case of job injuries
  • Is a Kinesiologist, School Teacher, Physical Education Specialist, Army veteran or Security Specialist
  • Currently works with kids and youth
  • Has been instructing selfdefense classes for a reputable martial arts or selfdefense company

The Interview Process has 3 steps:

  • To save time, Sumera will call applicants to discuss the position and get a sense of their qualifications and availability before setting up a formal Zoom interview.
  • If selected, can provide 2 relevant references, a police check (vulnerable sector check), copies of their diplomas/certifications, government ID and a valid CPR certificate, the signing of a volunteer instructor agreement outlining the terms and conditions

Honorarium

  • This is a seasonal / oncall volunteer instructor position that provides a
    $150 flat honorarium per class for their generous time and efforts


Applicants with the following experience, qualifications, and backgrounds are more likely to be considered: a Kinesiologist, School Teacher, Physical Education Specialist, Army veteran or Security Specialist, those with over 10 years of self-defense instruction, over 5 years of experience teaching kids/youth, valid CPR and first aid, valid police check (Vulnerable Sector Screening), commercial liability insurance, and those with strong references.

  • The event will run in the Spring (May to June) and the Fall (September to October) and may include up to 8 sessions. The instructor will need to be available on Thursdays or Fridays between 4 PM to 7 PM. The sessions will be hosted at different locations from Etobicoke North to Scarborough. There may also be oncall opportunities at our other centers. Please indicate if your current schedule will allow you to support any of these days and times and if oncall opportunities work for you. Priority will be placed on those that can meet our needs
