JMU302H1 Advanced Ear Training and Harmony

Course Description:

A continuation of JMU201Y1, this course addresses advanced ear training and theoretical concepts including "upper structure" voicings/chord extentions which are commonly found in post-bebop and contemporary jazz harmony.

Analysis and performance of the work of influential composers such as Wayne Shorter and Kenny Wheeler will be central in this course.


Class Schedule:
Mondays 2-4pm in the Fall term

Qualifications:
Graduate degree in jazz or equivalent professional experience. Extensive knowledge of jazz repertoire, jazz theory/composition, improvisation and performance styles. Active jazz performing career combined with demonstrated excellence teaching jazz at the university level.

Duties:

Define course objectives; prepare course materials; provide clear guidelines on course requirements and regulations; teach classes as scheduled; administer and evaluate student assignments; prepare and submit final grade in accordance with policy.

Maintain reasonable hours of student consultation outside scheduled class hours.
