What responsibilities you will hold within our team

Imperial is seeking an electrical engineering student at Strathcona Refinery, Edmonton. Under the mentorship of a senior electrical engineer and other discipline engineers, you will gain insight into electrical distribution and control systems within an operational petrochemical plant. Your role will involve supporting maintenance and enhancement projects for electrical equipment to ensure safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. There might be opportunities to present assigned projects at the conclusion of your term, depending on your department.

What you will be engaged in
  • Acquire knowledge of the refinery's electrical distribution system, including substations, switchgear, motor starters, relays, cable systems, and control hardware.
  • Diagnose failures to identify root causes for future prevention.
  • Analyze equipment fleet health and pinpoint vulnerabilities.
  • Create maintenance plans, evaluating equipment run length, maintenance needs, inspection intervals, and repair/replacement timings.
  • Develop electrical specifications for equipment upgrades or replacements in maintenance projects.
  • Enhance efficiency by understanding and innovating our operational processes.
About your profile

Skills and Qualifications

  • Pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering.
  • University student in Engineering available for a term starting in September 2024.
  • Enrolled in a University Engineering program and planning to return to full-time studies post-term.
  • Submission of most recent unofficial transcript(s) is required.
  • Display of leadership qualities and strong academic aptitude.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Prior industry exposure is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Dedication to safety both on and off-site.
  • Proficiency in English language, both written and verbal, is essential.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision in a team setting.

Term of Employment: 8, 12, 16 months
