Job Duties

Internship-Specific Responsibilities

  • Participates in the student and supervisor initial introduction to the clinical course(s) i.e., 'orientation day';
  • Orients supervisors (NPs and MDs and APNs) to the course(s) by reviewing learning objectives, expectations, course assessment tools, and relevant university policies and procedures;
  • Provides ongoing support to students in competency development throughout the internship;
  • Provides ongoing support to supervisors (NPs and MDs and APNs) in relation to the clarification of course objectives, expectations, teaching/learning principles, and student assessment;
  • Answers student and supervisor questions in a timely manner;
  • Promptly communicates any concerns related to student learning to the Course Coordinator;
  • Works with the Course Coordinator to develop and implement a learning plan for students experiencing difficulties in meeting course objectives and competency development;
  • Supports supervisors in completing clinical assessments and reviews/discusses with Course Coordinator as needed;
  • Participates in the development of continuing professional development activities & resources for clinical supervisors (e.g., training program, community of practice, tools, etc.);
  • Promotes and facilitates the development of students' competencies (knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors) through learning activities such as case presentations, journal article reviews, workshops, etc.;
  • Monitors the clinical hours completed and the required patient population experiences by reviewing the student rotation schedule on a weekly basis and discussing with Course Coordinator as needed;
  • Collaborates with the unit/clinic leadership to promote the best student learning experience possible;
  • Participates in relevant simulation activities, procedure skillsbuilding laboratories, and formative and summative OSCEs as requested by the Course Coordinator;
  • Provides support to course coordinator in reviewing pertinent course documents (e.g. student orientation guide, supervisor handbook, assessment tools, etc.);
  • Attends meetings with course coordinator and/or program director as required;
  • Identifies and participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives related to NP student clinical education.
Teaching and Service Responsibilities

Participates in teaching and service activities within the NP Program under the guidance of the NP Program Director.

These activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating Inquirybased learning (IBL) classes and developing or revising IBL cases for NP theory (reasoning) courses;
  • Coordinating/coCoordinating Health assessment, NP reasoning or Np Internship courses or Teaching health assessment or skills laboratories on specific topics as required;
  • Teaching certification courses as per specialty (CPR, ACLS, OMEGA, etc.);
  • Participating in NP program committees as required, e.g., admissions committee, program committee, accreditation committee, etc.;
  • Participating in the production of materials aimed at student recruitment and program promotion as required;
  • Representing the School in professional committees related to specialty. McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.
Qualifications and Education Requirements

Minimum requirements for consideration are:

  • Master's of Science in Nursing (NP);
  • Active registration with OIIQ as an Adult Care Nurse Practitioner in good standing;
  • Previous teaching experience (including NP student supervision) an asset;
  • A demonstrated commitment to and in accordance with circumstances, a track record in equity, diversity, and inclusiveness (EDI);
  • Keen sense of inquiry and ability to critically reflect on practice;
  • A willingness and ability to facilitate student learning;
  • Uptodate immunization status, valid mask fitting and other IPC training as required by the clinical site;
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in both English and French.
