Under the general direction of the Associate Registrar, this position provides counselling and support for Woodsworth College students in the Faculty of Arts and Science Acts and acts as a resource for students exploring further studies and/or career development opportunities.

In an advising role, the Academic Counsellor provides academic, personal and career, and general counselling to incoming and first year students including counselling on degree requirements as well as other academic matters, including petitions, LWDs (late withdrawals), rules and regulations of the Faculty, registration & enrolment, POSts (Programs of Study), admissions.

This position plans welcome/information sessions for incoming students, hosts weekly Q&A sessions and runs sessions on choosing programs, etc.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising students on the development of their educational plans
  • Leading seminars and/or workshops
  • Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
  • Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
  • Developing learning outcomes for workshops and/or services
  • Developing content for instructional workshops
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
  • Providing proactive support to individuals in distress and making referrals to specific university services

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience.
  • Minimum four (4) years of recent and related experience providing academic advising (educational plan development, course/program selection and requirement, petition/appeals, and financial management etc.) to students at a postsecondary education institution, with 3 years of experience working in a University College or Faculty registrar's office.
  • Experience providing academic advising to incoming and first year students with a diverse background.
  • Experience developing content and leading information sessions for incoming and first year students, such as sessions for program selections and educational planning etc.
  • Experience working with international students and students facing academic and/or personal difficulty.
  • Experience and advance skills with ROSI
  • Experience with File Maker Pro or other databases
  • Experience working with confidential information and communication protocols within the university
  • Expertise with Degree Explorer
  • Extensive knowledge of the offerings and regulations of the Faculty of Arts and Science and all college programs
  • Advanced Microsoft office skills including Word, EXCEL, Outlook, Power Point.
  • Advanced advising and/or counselling skills with a demonstrated ability to problem solve
  • Superior oral and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills, showing initiative and good judgement, and also the ability to work cooperatively and be an effective team member
  • Excellent customer services skill, with a strong commitment to service excellence
  • Ability to cope with a constantly changing and complex set of academic regulations
  • Have a comfort level and humane approach to counselling students who are struggling academically
  • Knowledge of support services on campus and ability to make effective referrals
