The Program

Vegreville Dakota House

This Disability Supports program assists persons with developmental disabilities and in need of behavioral supports to live supported in their community home, help them with daily home/life activities, and community inclusion.

Previous experience with complex, high behavior supports is an asset.
When escalated and displaying behaviors, persons-served may require de-escalation from self-injury (head butting), throwing objects, or damaging property

The Position

This 24-7 community-based home in Vegreville, supports male persons-served, at home (mentoring/supervising daily activities, household chores) to encourage independence and in the community (attending appointments, be involved in recreational/social activities, volunteer, etc.) to encourage integration into the community.

This program is double staffed during the day. The persons-served can independently toilet, bath and dress themselves, however some prompting may be required to ensure adequate cleanliness, bushing hair/teeth, etc.). Within the community the persons-served enjoy going out to socialize, eat out, swim, go to the gym, go for drives, attend community events.

NOTE* CUPE union membership required

*Complex need rate ($22.90+/hr) paid when supporting complex needs clients. Regular rate ($19.60) paid for training/meetings/non-complex needs work.*

In Your Role You Will
  • Support individuals to build life skills and be active in daily household chores which may include cooking, laundry, house cleaning, etc.
  • Model &/or when required, provide personal care, which may include, bathing, toileting, grooming, dental care, etc.
  • Encourage good citizenship skills and building of relationships within their home and community
  • Drive individual in your own vehicle to appointments, day programs, community events, etc..
  • use your knowledge and experience with disabilities, to identify issues, set goals and celebrate success.
  • coach individuals with behavior, emotional or physical challenges
  • reinforce strengths that are already in place and offer support within the home and around the community.
  • Contribute toward design, implementation and evaluation of individual service plans, program specific policies & procedures.
  • Communicate/document information that relates to program changes/service recipient changes to peers, ministry representatives and other stakeholders as required.
  • Observe/document needs of individuals in service.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
  • A passion for working in the diverse abilities sector and caring for others
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and complex mental health needs. Other experience such as LPN, Nursing or Health Care Aide may be considered.
  • High School Diploma/GED or Diploma/Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education or equivalent
  • MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License, clear driving abstract and reliable vehicle with suitable insurance.
  • Cooking and cleaning are part of the responsibilities of this role
  • Experience supporting clients/patients with complex behaviours an asset.
  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right to define/pursue their life choices, and participate in community events, employment and recreation.
ALSO helpful, but will train if needed:
  • Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self help, etc.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
