The Opportunity


As a senior member of our Underwriting & Claims leadership team, the
AVP, Underwriting & Claims Risk Management drives the risk management practices in Individual Insurance.

Reporting directly to the VP of Underwriting and Claims and Chief Underwriter, this individual leads existing risk programs, collaborates on innovation, and helps handle emerging risk.

They are also responsible for encouraging a forward thinking, collaborative, results-oriented environment in underwriting and claims team.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the underwriting and claims transformation strategy, through the design, development and delivery of ideas, programs and initiatives passionate about innovating our philosophy with focus on driving the intersection of analytics, underwriting and claims.
  • Collaborate with Advanced Analytics, Product, Pricing and Operations leads to develop advanced streamlined and simplified underwriting and claims capabilities
  • Perform research on innovations in the insurance space and their applicability to improving Manulife's underwriting offerings. Assess the impact and collaborates with Chief Underwriter and Product leads to recommend and incorporate new trends and developments in current and future directions.
  • Research, negotiate and onboard vendor services and technology solutions to complement Manulife's underwriting and claims approach
  • Own the development of business requirements and collaborate with IT resources to conceptualize ideas
  • Participates and represents the company in industry forums to stay ahead of competitor actions and industry advances

What we are looking for

  • Broad knowledge of life insurance with minimum of 10 years individual underwriting and/or claims experience, including project work and research. FALU/FLMI is an asset.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of medical, nonmedical and financial underwriting principles and practices
  • Sound knowledge of Artificial Intelligence concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge of life insurance product features, distribution, underwriting, administration, and pricing practices
  • Broad knowledge of mortality modeling and medical drivers of mortality
  • Previous leadership experience
  • Highly engaged: able to selfmanage workflow and push projects forward where no established process exists under deadline pressure
  • Strong communication skills; comfort presenting to management on sophisticated technical topics Excellent MS Office Skills

Salary & Benefits


The annual base salary for this role in the primary location of Waterloo, Ontario is expected to be between $120,400.00 CAD - $223,700.00 CAD.
