What you'll do

  • Perform clerical duties such as scheduling appointments, performing computer entry, filing, telephoning, faxing, and invoicing.
  • Receive and register patients by obtaining necessary information for patient data and test entry into the Laboratory Information System according to established procedures. Explain sample collection procedures to and answers related questions of patients.
  • Receive, process, and prepare (centrifuges) patient samples in accordance with established procedures.
  • Prioritize workflow and prepares (packages) samples for sendout in accordance with all transportation regulations and procedures.
  • Distribute, file, retrieve, and dispose of laboratory specimens, slides, and blocks.
  • Mail and distribute patient reports as required.
  • Maintain (counts, stocks and alerts appropriate leader when volume is low) laboratory inventory and supplies.
  • Maintain a variety of records such as standing orders and requisitions, temperature records, cleaning and disinfection logs, inventory logs.
  • Clean/disinfect/wipe work area(s) as per established procedure
  • Assist with the orientation of new department staff as directed.
  • Participate in departmental continuous quality improvement activities and utilizing knowledge of laboratory workflow provide input to problem solve and improve service and processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What you bring

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12, medical terminology, and two (2) years' recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
You will also have

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to deal with others effectively
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work
  • Ability to type at 45 w.p.m
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and antiracism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
