Location Full job descriptionOur client, Volunteer Canada, are seeking a full-time_ Chief Strategy and Advancement Officer to join their team in Ontario._ Their mission is to advance volunteerism to grow connection, community and belonging.
Reporting to the President and CEO, this new leadership position is an exciting opportunity to lead the development of the National Volunteer Action Strategy (NVAS) and drive the development of the corresponding public affairs and advancement framework.

Some of your key responsibilities in this role will include:
Strategy development and stakeholder engagement (25%)
- Enabling the development of a national strategy while also building and fostering local capacity and deepened relationships is critical for this position. Specifically, a comfort level working amidst complexity and balancing diverse perspectives and interests while advancing measurable and impact-oriented strategies to support and strengthen volunteerism is core to this role. This includes:
- Building and leading a stakeholder engagement and a relationship development framework
- Generating a vision and building a coalition of partners throughout the strategy development process
- Continuously adapting the strategy development process to achieve outcomes in relational and socially-just ways
Advancement and development (25%)
- The Strategy Lead will be the senior leader responsible for identifying and cultivating partnerships that will support the development and implementation of the strategy. To that end, they will:
- Demonstrate and cultivate funding and partnership relationships that are mutual value
- Strengthen and build the field of philanthropic partners and contributors interested in advancing a movement of volunteerism in the country
- Building reciprocal, value-driven, and diverse partnerships and networks
- Lead the growth of philanthropic partners invested in the work nationally and across our network of partners
Public affairs, government advocacy, knowledge mobilization (25%)
- Working closely with government(s) will be critical to the success of this position. Generating key learnings, mobilizing grassroots campaigns and developing an iterative process to support awareness-raising across different government stakeholder groups will be essential. This includes:
- Build and execute a government relations strategy
- Develop and implement an accessible and resonant communications and public affairs strategy
- Identifying and mobilizing key policy objectives with key audiences across government
- Engaging key internal and external partners for support with meeting and convening policy makers, public opinion polling, and other government relations activities
- Working with staff to roll up recommendations into a strategy document.
- Making strategy recommendations and presenting drafts to relevant decision-makers.
Project management, planning and staff leadership (15%)
- The Strategy Lead will direct a small NVAS development team of internal (staff) and external (consultant/contractor) resources focused on government, corporate, and community engagement and other strategy development tasks. This includes:
- Hiring and managing staff team using HR best practices and in alignment with Volunteer Canada's policies and values
- Engaging and managing consultants in alignment with Volunteer Canada's policies and values
- Developing and updating the overall project plan using appropriate tools and approaches
- Developing and maintaining a project budget, tracking actuals against forecasts, and flagging any potential issues
- Maintaining communication with Volunteer Canada team to ensure integration with other organizational plans and priorities.
- Working with staff to roll up recommendations into a strategy document.
- Making strategy recommendations and presenting drafts to relevant decision-makers.
Engagement and Stakeholder management (10%)
- The Strategy Lead has responsibility for the successful engagement of the National Advisory Council along with Volunteering Matters (a technical working group) along with other networks and key coalitions invested in advancing this work. This includes:
- Engaging senior leaders to the above committees and networks
- Developing strong working relationships with individual members and the Councils as a whole
- Working with staff to present background information, recommendations, and other information to the Advisory Council to elicit feedback and approval
- Working with staff to convene effective meetings
Qualifications:
Experience
- Senior leadership in advancement and knowledge and relationships of partners and contributors that will advance this work strategically, and in material ways
- Senior leadership experience in policymaking, policy advocacy, and/or government relations
- Experience managing complex projects with government, corporate, and philanthropic funding sources
- Demonstrated experience in strategy management and strategy development across complex systems. Experience with budget planning and management
- Proven passion and commitment to volunteering and supporting systems change Experience hiring, leading, motivating, coaching, and supporting a small staff team
- Experience engaging and managing external consultants and contractors
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to engage effectively with community, government, philanthropic, and corporate stakeholders
- Ability to build diverse and reciprocal relationships and networks to advance sector-strengthening work, including with equity-seeking groups
- Ability to work in a connected, collaborative way that respects the community contexts from which everyone works, including equity-seeking groups
- Demonstrated knowledge of the tools, resources and tactics required to develop a successful sector strategy
- Demonstrated qualities of flexibility, resourcefulness, creativity, innovation
- Excellent English communication, presentation, analysis and writing skills
- Bilingualism (English and French) strongly preferred.
