The Substance Use Worker provides support to the community members we serve that are facing substance use problems and challenges.

This position is part of our Mobile Outreach Addiction Team (MOAT). They will engage with clients through an interdisciplinary team model, providing each client with access to services, referrals, relevant information, and treatment support

Key Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload up to 25 clients with a humancentred approach. One should incorporate motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and building client selfefficacy.
  • Be responsible for intaking new clients, completing addiction screening and assessments, goal and/or case planning with the client and followup work on the case plan.
  • Maintain client files, data entry, and incident tracking while staying up to date on communication both internally and externally related to client cases.
  • Support clients and team members with appropriate referrals related to their case planning.
  • Coordinate transportation to appointments for clients using either their personal vehicle, public transportation, or taxi services.
  • Note that this position may also require driving alone and/or staff and with clients
  • Support community members with the navigation of local and provincewide treatments related to their individual needs.
  • Stay up to date on related programs both within and outside of BSCS to support referrals and personal knowledge of the industry.
  • Participate in case conferencing within your assigned interdisciplinary team.
  • Personnel Administrative duties such as recording and submitting, expense claims, entering accurate timesheets.
  • Work Outreach shifts (up to 2 shifts per week) as needed to support your team.
  • Attend conferences and meetings within the agency and with external partners.
  • Facilitate educational presentations for the MOAT program as needed.
  • BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking etc.

Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Post Secondary Degree in a relevant field of study (Social Work, Psychology)
  • Minimum 2 years' experience working as a Substance Use Worker.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience delivery communitybased services.
  • Previous training in Suicide Intervention, Indigenous Awareness, and Harm Reduction is an asset.
  • Experience working within Edmonton's innercity is preferred.
  • Mental Resiliency and an aptitude for problem solving will be beneficial when working in an environment with challenges and risks
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends, and services particularly, but not limited to the urban aboriginal population is essential
  • Ability to solve related issues and conflict in an ethical manner

Training & Screening Requirements:

  • Full Class 5 license required for this position.
  • Valid First Aid certificate required
  • Police Information Check kept up to date (every 3 years)
  • Child and Youth Intervention record kept up to date (every 3 years)
