Work environment:

The Yukon Regional Office (YRO) is responsible for prosecutions throughout Yukon Territory. The regional headquarters is located in Whitehorse. The region's areas of prosecution focus are Criminal Code prosecutions, prosecutions under the CDSA, and regulatory prosecutions.

Whitehorse is Yukon's capital and a major northern hub. It enjoys facilities, services and businesses far beyond the expectation of a city of 30,000.

It's a big little city surrounded by wilderness with the amenities of a much larger destination paired with the friendly demeanour of a close-knit community.

Education:


Successful completion of two years of a post-secondary program with acceptable specialization in paralegal studies or a law related field OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

  • Experience in conducting legal research and analysis.
  • Experience in maintaining and updating an information management system (such as iCase, Ringtail, PRISM, JUSTIN, Amicus).
  • Experience using Microsoft office Suite.
  • Experience in preparing, reviewing, and managing a wide variety of legal documents.


These qualifications are not essential to perform the work, but would benefit the organization or enhance the work to be performed currently or in the future.


Asset Qualifications - Experience:

  • Experience as a paralegal working on medium complexity* cases, files, or projects.
  • Medium Complexity is defined as a broad range of legal competencies with respect to the litigation conduct, and more particularly the discovery process to coordinate and/or advance related activities, such as:
  • Coordination of the collection of documents, in collaboration with partners and stakeholders;
  • Reviewing/analyzing documents to determine facts and legal issues;
  • Determination of relevancy and identification of different privileges, etc;
  • Management of the evidence management system such as: database setup, document cleanup, quality control and final coding, etc;
  • Drafting legal documents, i.e., pleadings, motions, memoranda, settlement brief, and other documents.
  • Experience working in the criminal law field.
  • Experience working in a Northern environment.
  • Experience working in a crosscultural environment, particularly in Indigenous communities.

Operational Requirements:

  • Requirement to travel which may include assignments on short notice and for extended periods.
