Marqeta seeks a skilled Software Engineer II to drive the development of robust and sustainable software projects from conception to execution and deployment. In this role, you will implement defined projects to accomplish team objectives, take ownership of minor features to support larger functionalities, contribute significantly to test development, bug resolution, and potentially guide new hires, interns, or junior engineers.

The Disputes Engineering Team focuses on creating automations, integrations, and tools to streamline the management of payment disputes on a large scale. We have established an abstraction layer over major card networks such as Visa, Mastercard, and Pulse to aid operations teams in dispute management and are expanding to cover all aspects of the cardholder dispute process.

This position can be performed remotely from anywhere in Toronto, ON, or Vancouver, BC, Canada. We welcome you to be part of our team

What You'll Do

  • Individually develop and deliver clear, error-free code consistently.
  • Break down simple problems or business scenarios into solutions comprising multiple interacting software components.
  • Take charge of small features.
  • Contribute to team goals, work on minor features supporting larger ones.
  • Effectively navigate a large codebase, contribute to test development and bug fixing.
  • Engage in core team processes, suggest and implement improvements, participate in planning, bug handling, metrics evaluation, etc.
  • Ensure the team produces secure and compliant products for customers.
  • Promote a positive team spirit (e.g., participate in team activities, assist in new-hire orientation, etc.).

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience as a backend engineer plus a Bachelor's degree; or an advanced degree without relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 5+ years of relevant experience could suffice.
  • Proficiency in Java development.
  • Aptitude to create and deliver clean, well-documented, bug-free code with thorough testing.
  • Ability to comprehend existing designs and technology choices, making necessary adjustments when needed.
  • Effective communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Readiness to share pertinent information, including difficult task-level trade-offs that impact the product.
  • Demonstrate humility, empathy, and a positive approach to constructive feedback.
  • Keenness to advance in your career, acquire knowledge, exchange ideas, and help others progress and learn.
  • Capability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, embracing a collaborative, team-based mindset.

When setting salaries, we consider various factors like skills, previous experience, and work location. The starting base salary range for this role, denoted in CAD, is: $81,000.
