Department summary


The Dean of Students supports all students — undergraduate and graduate — in the pursuit of academic and personal success.

The Dean of Students collaborates with faculties, offices, and services across all campuses to deliver effective programming and provides leadership on university policies and initiatives.


The Office of the Dean of Students coordinates many services that strive to create diverse and inclusive support in all stages of the student experience, including: academic resources, career and professional development health & wellness services, and community resources.


Position summary


Reporting to the Manager, Student Care Coordination, this position will play a critical role in supporting the mission for student success from the Dean of Students at the University of Alberta (U of A).

The Student Care Coordinator (SCC) is responsible for assessing, responding, and addressing student-related situations that have the potential to adversely impact the student's success and experience as well as the U of A community.

The incumbent will manage the response to students in varying degrees of distress which impact their academic and personal pursuits on campus.

The incumbent implements the operational activities of the Dean of Students (DoS) and the office's role in managing response to complaints and disclosures under the Student Misconduct Complaint Procedure and the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy.

The incumbent will support students in whatever capacity is required.

The primary component of the incumbent's work will be supporting students impacted by misconduct on campus by taking disclosures and overviewing and implementing action when appropriate, including the use of non-disciplinary accountability options such as restorative practices and transformative justice.


Responsibilities include a collaborative process of assessment, planning, and coordination of services and supports to meet a student's wellbeing and academic needs.

In addition to support those impacted by misconduct, the SCC will also support students who have complex mental health concerns, including those who have been hospitalized, and require access to multiple on and off campus services and supports to manage their wellbeing and academics, the SCC provides intensive, personalized case management services.

They also play a central role in campus-wide crisis management and emergency response for students in crisis and those students impacted by the crisis.


The SCC will serve as a conduit between parents and other stakeholders, and the Dean of Students, by making initial contact, advocating for student needs, seeking information and representing the office and institution in a professional, caring, and kind manner.

The SCC will be a member of the Student Life team who regularly meets with HIAR, University of Alberta Protective Services (UAPS), Residence Services, International Student Services, General Counsel, External Relations, and Faculty representatives.
