As we look to keep growing, we are excited to be hiring a Production Coffee Roaster to help us in our mission to roast approachable coffees.


Working as part of our Roasting team, the Production Roaster at Detour is responsible for the execution of the production roast schedule as required by weekly orders.

The role is physically demanding, and one that requires hard work and commands focus and a keen attention to detail.

Coffee is to be produced to the roast profile set by the Head Roaster and must meet the high quality standards set forth by Detour management.

The position is not limited to roasting coffee and will include assistance with other aspects of our roastery including quality control, pre
- and post-roast production activities, machine cleaning and maintenance and warehousing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Completing daily roasting according to requirements
  • Responsible for daily roaster operation (start up and/or shut down, production roasting, general cleaning)
  • Accurately weighing out green coffee for each production batch
  • Heavy lifting green and roasted coffee
  • Ensuring product consistency by accurately following roast profiles and hitting roast profile targets with the use of Cropster
  • Ensuring that all roasts are properly batch coded, labeled and used following FIFO practices
  • Follow all procedures of logging batch information into Cropster and the roast logging sheet
  • Responsible for operating the optical sorting machine to sort roasted coffee
  • Conducting a minimum of 1525% of weekly quality assurance duties as outlined by the Head Roaster
  • Continual learning and development for quality, process and self improvement
  • Collaborating with Orders Desk to ensure roast sheet / schedule is completed and accurate
  • Performing weekly roaster maintenance and coordinating larger cleans and repairs with the Head Roaster
  • Participating in warehousing to ensure green coffee is restocked and prepped as needed before each roasting shift
  • Supporting team members in packing and shipping department to ensure all orders are completed
  • Maintaining a clean working area by following closing procedures at the end of each roasting shift
  • Follow all policies, procedures, ergonomic standards and safety requirements set by the company and comply with good manufacturing practices and standards
  • Other duties as required or requested by management

Experience Required:

  • 12 years of experience in a cafe or roastery setting (Roastery setting ideal)
  • Cupping and tasting experience an asset
  • Proficiency and experience working with Google OfficeSuite (Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc.) an asset
  • Experience working in a food production setting an asset

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift or carry 30 lbs to 50 lbs max, 75 lbs assisted
  • Ability to push or pull up to 150 lbs using supplied equipment
  • Frequent twisting, turning, bending and constant standing required
  • Standing in place for several hours at a table to operate machinery and follow roast curves on a computer monitor
  • Follows all policies, procedures, ergonomic standards and safety requirements
  • Forklift license an asset

Qualifications:

  • Must have mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, thoroughness and flexibility
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions accurately
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
  • Eager to work with many different personalities and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for coffee
