GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY


The Ship Steward acts as an ambassador for the Owen Sound Transportation Company (OSTC) to ensure a safe and hospitable passage for customers and crew.

The Ship Steward responds to any passenger disturbances and deescalates or administers first aid as required. The Ship Steward acts as a shift supervisor for staff within the Steward's department.

The Steward's department oversees the café/dining room, the gift boutique, the ship bar, interior housekeeping, first aid and general customer service on board the vessel.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
The primary job duties and responsibilities for the Ship Steward include but are not limited to the following:

  • As an ambassador for OSTC, ensures a high level of customer service for passengers on board the vessel. Adhere to the needs of crew and passengers to best of ability to ensure a hospitable and safe environment for all. Deescalate customer disputes or disturbances. Completion of incident reports as required, informs the Chief Steward of events for any necessary follow-up.
  • Acts as a shift supervisor for all Steward's Department staff which includes Ship Stewards, all Cooks and Service Aides. Ensure all policies and procedures are being followed within and by those in the Stewards Department. Escalates any staff issues from shift to the Chief Steward.
  • With oversight from the Chief Steward, ordering of provisions to come aboard daily as well as the ordering of stores (supplies, groceries, etc.) through vendors/providers in accordance with procurement policies and directives.
  • Ensure payment terminals are ready and operational to begin the day and monitor all systems onboard, including trouble shooting and solving of issues with the pointofsale system. Oversee and carry out that all cash/credit reports are collected, correct, and recorded at days end and the deliverance of all reports from the South Baymouth Terminal to Tobermory Terminal.
  • Oversee the delivery and removal of ship's passenger ramp at dock and accurately track and report passenger and crew counts for each crossing. Ensure the passenger ramp is removed from the ship at end of sail day and passenger ramp gate secured.
  • Oversees the housekeeping during shift of the interior of the ship to ensure a clean and safe environment for passengers and crew.
  • Perform the duties of the Chief Steward in relation to the Marine Evacuation System and Fire Plan.
  • First Aid: The onduty Steward takes a lead in First Aid delivered aboard the ship as well as reporting of all medical incidents onboard.
  • During shift, will oversee kitchen staff so that all provincial and federal health regulations are adhered to.
  • Daily completion and monitoring of all health and safety related checklists within the Steward's Department.
  • All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, WORK EXPERIENCE, and SKILLS

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the hospitality industry including retail and point of sale experience. Experience in the marine industry is a strong asset
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a shift supervisor capacity
  • Marine Emergency Duties course completion
  • Marine Advanced First Aid
  • Safe Food Handling course an asset
  • Adept in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of products (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Professional, friendly verbal communication; ability to listen and respond to passenger inquiries with diplomacy and tact.

SAFETY SENSITIVE ENVIRONMENT

  • Zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol use, or being under the influence of such, while on duty or on OSTC property
  • Ensure Safe Food Handling
  • Personal Protective Equipment may be required

EFFORT - PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS
Work involves physical effort, bending, crouching, and walking. Work requires handling ship supplies and lifting up to 50 pounds. Personal protective equipment may be required. Must be able to work long hours.
