The Opportunity


The Operations Department is comprised of four Branches: Administration, Parks and Forestry Operations, Roads and Fleet Operations and Solid Waste Operations.

Key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City's public works infrastructure and systems including roadways; rail, winter maintenance; parks and green spaces, including forestry; solid waste operations; and maintenance of the corporation's fleet of vehicles and equipment.


Under the general direction of the Driver and Operator - Specialized Vehicle, and reporting to the Roads Operations Foreperson, the Roads Operations Labourer (Student) is responsible for assisting with the maintenance of City roads, walkways, signs, sidewalks, boulevards and drainage infrastructure.

Specifically, this position trims vegetation, repairs sod damage, collects litter. This position also assists with asphalt and drainage infrastructure repairs, and sign installation and repairs.

Overall, this position plays an integral role in maintaining attractive and safe public spaces that enhance the quality of life for City of Barrie citizens, visitors, and businesses.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in Secondary School, College, or University*
    Experience
  • Six (6) months of cumulative parttime experience or three (3) months of fulltime experience performing duties related to the
above mentioned major responsibilities

  • Demonstrated experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities.

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Demonstrated Ability to:
- exert effort to lift, push, pull, or carry objects for short periods of time
- work independently with mínimal supervision

  • Basic skills include: Active Listening; Attention to Detail; Problem Solving; Teamwork
  • Availability to work outside of schedule work hours to perform standby, overtime, or emergency response duties

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence in good standing

$16.86 to $20.57 per hour
