Your Challenge:

  • Management of environmental health and safety programs in a multidisciplinary, unionized manufacturing environment (Inventory/warehousing, Fabrication, Welding, Machining, Electrical and Mechanical Assembly, Test, Painting/Finishing, Shipping/Logistics).
  • Develops overall safety program strategy to align with Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Curtiss-Wright corporate safety program framework requirements.
  • Takes every reasonable precaution to protect the health and safety of all employees.
  • Acts as local site main point of contact for Curtiss-Wright corporate safety program
  • Acts as Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Management cochair in conjunction with the Manager, Operations. Prepares meeting minutes, reports and tracks actions to completion.
  • Leads/coordinates JHSC monthly workplace inspections
  • Coordinates and manages new employee safety training and orientation
  • Develops custom safety training material and delivers training. Outsources and engages external consultants and thirdparty training agencies where required
  • Develops and maintains Job Hazard Analysis for safety critical production activities
  • Conducts safety incident and near miss investigations, initiates and follows up on required corrective actions, follows all early and safe return to work procedures and WSIB requirements for return to work.
  • Manages prestart review (PSR) activity and maintains documentation, engaging external consultants and third party training agencies where required
  • Establishes, monitors, reports and uses environmental health and safety program Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prepares monthly safety program performance reports and maintains safety program communication visual board.
  • Manages Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) program
  • Responsible for all aspects of safety program management, including workplace ergonomics, industrial hygiene, hearing protection, lockout/tagout, first aid, heat stress, fire safety, confined space, and crane/lifting equipment worker training/recertification and inspection programs
  • Prepares, manages and maintains health and safety written policies, processes and procedures
  • Responsible for environmental reporting requirements, engaging external consultants and third party training agencies where required
  • Develops safe work procedures, ensures training of all staff and compliance with safety procedures.
  • Implements, leads and executes environmental health and safety related continuous improvement initiatives under direction of, or in collaboration with Director, Operations.
  • Liaises with Manager, Operations and Manager, Manufacturing Engineering to recommend and implement facility, machinery and equipment upgrades to improve safety, productivity and efficiency in the operation.
  • Promotes a strong safety culture and safe work practices within the workplace. Fosters an open and productive relationship with employees and maintains a positive work environment. Encourages and maintains open lines of communications with all employees
  • What You Bring:
  • Minimum 5 years of environmental health and safety program management in a multi-disciplinary, industrial environment. Defense industry experience as well as managerial experience in a unionized environment are preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including Reg. 851 for Industrial Establishments
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (P.Eng.) and/or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certification considered an asset
  • JHSC certification (OHSA section 7.6) considered an asset.
  • Strong working knowledge of industrial processes and safety considerations (e.g. forklift/crane operations, material handling operations, WHMIS, welding safety, machine guarding and safety (CNC and conventional), electrical safety)
  • Experience as management co-chair on JHSC required
  • Proven ability to develop safety training programs, job hazard analysis, written safety policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of requirements for, and management of, pre-start reviews
  • Experience performing Physical Demands Analysis for key roles considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, monitor and manage safety and environmental KPIs.
  • Experience in ISO45001 and/or 14001 certification would be considered an asset
