KEY FUNCTION:


Work collaboratively with Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician to ensure safe medication distribution according to the standards and guidelines of the Ontario College of Pharmacists.


REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Pharmacy Operations.

DUTIES:

  • Assist with the preparation and dispensing of medication for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Assist with sterile/non
- sterile compounding.

  • Utilize and ensure functionality of packaging automation (e.g. Swisslog Pillpicker, ARxium FastPak, etc.) to package medications into unit doses.
  • Receive, sort and put away medications in appropriate areas of the pharmacy.
  • Check stock for expiry dates to identify beyond use dated medications to be returned and/or destroyed.
  • Order, receive and sort pharmaceutical supplies as required.
  • Maintain department work areas by ensuring tidiness.
  • Operate cash register and handle medication transactions for the outpatient pharmacy.
  • Deliver or send medications to the appropriate units using the pneumatic tube system.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  • Minimum of a graduate from a Pharmacy Assistant program or a relevant Health Care program from an accredited college.
  • Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) years' experience in a retail/hospital pharmacy setting is preferred.
  • Additional health care experience is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated experience in unit dose medication distribution system.
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of coworkers and patients.
