Position Summary


At The Learning Place we have a special team that strives to service the community and focuses on helping those most in need to upskill/reskill and learn basic literacy skills that position the most vulnerable to succeed in their educational journey.

We recently developed a new employability skills development program that will help to minimize some of the skills gaps highlighted by the Covid pandemic and are in demand from a labour market skills gap perspective.

You will be a key member of the Skills for Success Pilot Program.

The role will focus on working with vulnerable populations (women, Indigenous peoples, persons with developmental disabilities to name a few of the groups this role will interact with) with a focus on the Region of Peel.

Program delivery is geared towards in-person learning since this is the best way to reach these populations but if the need arises, we may host cohorts virtually.

The SFS program will run in 8-week cohort intervals for the next 1 year. This ground breaking test pilot project is funded by The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development will run until April
2024 as a proof of concept.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum Development and Delivery

  • Plan and deliver instruction per week according to the SFS program guidelines; Familiarity of the OALCF framework and Milestone Index would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Language and Basic Skills (LBS) programming would be considered an tremendous asset
  • Be familiar with creating relevant, varied curriculum for learner's interests, abilities, and the structure of the SFS program within the OALCF framework.
  • Find creative resources to draw upon for curriculum creation and incorporate them into the program.
  • Work with the internal marketing team to create social media posts and raise awareness for the SFS program as well as help recruit learners for the program for upcoming cohorts
  • Find creative ways to reach leaners both current and potential through marketing initiatives.
  • Know how to tailor the program materials to learners of differing abilities to effectively deliver the course content within the framework of topics of the SFS program.
  • Prepare course facilities, teaching material and equipment. Prepare and update program outlines, lesson plans and material for participants as required.
  • Provide program instruction/leadership at the appropriate skill level of participants within the framework of the SFS program and OALCF framework.
  • Comfortable in leveraging technology to enrich program materials including delivery and development.
  • Ensure to provide quality instruction and facilitating student learning according to the prescribed curriculum.

Operational Tasks:

  • Conduct ongoing assessments, track learner progress, and maintain learners' records as required by The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and The Government of Ontario Skills for Success criteria.
  • Integrate computer skills into programming when possible and encourage learners to use our computer lab for assignments and milestones within the SFS program curriculum framework.
  • Must be comfortable working with adults and familiar with common adult education methodologies.
  • Critical to be a self starter and a forward thinker to anticipate issues and be proactive to address them
  • Familiarity with Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) in the region is a definite asset but not required.
  • Submit high level assessments and progress reporting for each learner cohort over the course of 1 year for reporting results to funder.

Strategic Planning:

  • Work closely with ED and/or Program Manager each quarter for strategic planning readiness.
  • Aid staff and ED in preparing.
PPT presentations as needed for existing community partners and establishing new community partner relationships as it relates to the LBS program

  • Take part in planning and executing tasks for yearly Spring 2024 Fundraiser
  • Contribute to year end final report for the SFS program to be submitted to funding body and conclusion of program ( April 2024)

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 24 years working with underrepresented adults 19+ would be a tremendous asset
  • 12 years of case management and support would be a highly soughtafter skill
