Duties/Responsibilities

  • Identifies trees to species, especially native species and common horticultural varieties.
  • Measures tree attributes (e.g., diameter, height, crown width).
  • Evaluates tree health and condition with regard to roads operations and safety.
  • Evaluates tree protection measures relative to construction and operations activities.
  • Conducts tree assessment with regard to hazards and liabilities.
  • Uses GPS to locate trees within Waterloo Region and to provide attribute values and descriptions.
  • Develops and implements computerized inventory system for roadside trees in Waterloo Region.
  • Determines presence/absence of common tree pests and diseases (e.g., Emerald Ash Borer).
  • Develops and implements basic woodland inventory for Regional properties.
  • Determines and locates property boundary lines using various resources. Assesses level and degree of invasive woodland species within woodlands.
  • Use common forestry tools (e.g., laser rangefinder, calipers).
  • Works outside to conduct field visits approximately 80% of the time and in a standard office approximately 20% of the time and. Exercises precautions when working in isolated environments (forests, woodlands), and in/around weather, dirt, dust, exhaust, odours, and traffic hazards. Range of movement is required (walking, bending, stooping). Regularly carries equipment weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of general forestry and horticultural practices, tree identification, tree risk assessment, and invasive species through current enrolment in a Forestry Technician program.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, standards, regulations and legislation.
  • Analytical, research, organizational, and problem solving skills to analyse inventory data and make recommendations and options for management.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Communication skills to communicate clearly and effectively with homeowners/residents about tree and forest management; provide technical guidance to contractors, consultants, and staff; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Computer skills using software such as MS Office, Acrobat Reader, GIS software, and GPS programs.
  • Must have a valid G driver's license (or G2 with 3 years of driving experience) and acceptable driving record to operate corporate vehicles.
