The Department of Family Practice educates students, physicians, and midwives to be effective providers of patient-centered care in the context of family and community.

The Department of Family Practice has over 4,000 academic and clinical faculty members, who are physicians, midwives and other clinicians, working in 20 sites across the province to ensure more people have access to medical care that has continuity, is comprehensive, and serves community needs.

Academic and clinical faculty members mentor and supervise midwifery and medical students in community midwifery and family practice offices.


The UBC Midwifery Program includes a Bachelor Degree in Midwifery (BMw), the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP), a Continuing Professional Development program, a Global Health program and funded midwifery researchers.

The BMw admits 32 students annually into the four-year degree and the IEMBP admits 16 students annually into its nine-month program.

Both programs focus on applicants who will practice in British Columbia.

The successful incumbent will have the following training and qualifications as outlined below:
Master's degree in Midwifery or related field such as Public Health, Nursing, etc.; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered

Registration in good standing or eligibility to register with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives.

Five (5) years or more experience in clinical practice, or an equivalent combination of teaching and clinical experience

Demonstrated evidence of ability in teaching, and the promise to achieve excellence in teaching

Previous experience teaching Midwifery at a university level preferred

Knowledge of or experience with international practices of Midwifery is an asset

Experience in collaborating and bringing forward projects with diverse groups, including colleagues, students, and/or stakeholders, is valued.
