After School Special Needs Caregiver

Summary of Position:
Provide after school care for a teenaged boy - Andrew - with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Developmental Delay.
The caregiver will pick up Andrew at the end of the school day, transport him to his residence, and provide support and care until parents arrive home.
This will run from the start of September to the end of June.Description of Charge:
Andrew is 19 years old and on the severe end of the Autism Spectrum. According to his assessment he is considered non-verbal. He does have approximately words and his receptive language is better.
When properly managed, any meltdowns, or anxiety related behaviours are very rare. When he does become elevated, he will escalate from yelling; to personal property damage; to self-harm, and sometimes vomiting. Intervention in the early stages can effectively redirect him to express his anxiety or frustrations in a healthier manner.
Andrew can do many things on his own. He can reheat food in the microwave. Get himself a snack. Get dressed. Put on his own shoes or boots. He can use the bathroom himself. While he can do all these things, he still needs light supervision and/or reminders. Like reminding him to close the door when using the bathroom when he forgets.
Andrew has a big love for music and is currently enjoying the 50's and 60's era. He plays the keyboard and sings often. He enjoys going to and watching all kinds of movies and will gladly tell you all about them. He often plays his favorite racing game on the Xbox when returning home from school. He enjoys meeting new people and is very empathic toward others. He's quite silly at times, and thinks he is a hilarious guy.
Detail of Position:
- Routine (approximately 31⁄2 hours per day)
- Pickup Andrew from school between 14:15 and 14:30
- Receive update of Andrew's day from the EA
- Drive Andrew to our residence, approximately 25km north of Kingston.
- Once Andrew is settled at home, let dogs out to fenced back yard.
- Assist with providing an afternoon snack if requested.
- Monitor Andrew until parents arrive home.
- Provide any updates from school and/or home with respect to Andrew.
- Assist with administrative paperwork timekeeping, etc.
- 1 or 2 training and familiarization sessions will be booked prior to the start of the school year.
- There are 187 school days in the 2023/2024 postsecondar school calendar (Sep-Jun).
Renumeration:
The position has an hourly wage of $32.00 per hour. Payments of $.50 per kilometer will be paid for the use of a personal vehicle. The return trip will also be paid, both time and distance.
Qualifications:
Experience caring for autistic individuals or relevant education in the field.
First Aid certification is an asset.
