Support Staff Full-time New Position

The Technologist, DLX acts as the technology resource for the VARLab/DLX. The incumbent handles all VARLab IT needs for the department, including installation and configuration, patch and update installation, repair and recovery actions, coordination/planning for tours or special events, and reconfiguration of VARLabs in support of academic delivery. The incumbent is a key team member to support faculty and students in the DLX delivery on-campus for the demonstration, supervision, testing, and evaluation of technology. The incumbent demonstrates best practice in work with co-op and work-study students.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with three days on-site and two days remote. On-site work will take place at the Waterloo and Doon campuses.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the adaptation of VARLab technical environment to the various learning styles of students to ensure they demonstrate the level of skill required to complete the simulations
  • Designs and provides initial orientation and ongoing guidance to support simulation use to faculty, students, and other stakeholders
  • Designs and executes processes to confirm functionality of VARLab equipment such as computers, headsets, etc.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for the VARLab
  • Oversees cleaning and preparation of VARLab spaces as required
  • Demonstrates correct practical skills to achieve learning outcomes
  • Provides remedial assistance to students undertaking VR/simulation training
  • Contributes to VARLab resources development through input at team and program meetings
  • Documents configurations and capacities of VARLab
  • Maintains strong communication with program faculty and/or coordinators to ensure VARLab readiness to support student training
  • Monitors VARLab usage and capacity
  • Records scheduled and non-scheduled hours of lab usage, equipment usage, and other data
  • Compiles monthly reports on lab usage for review by Manager
  • Maintains inventory catalog and identifies end-of-life and end-of-service components
  • Provides recommendations for hardware and software to department Manager
  • Initiates purchase/rental/loan of materials and equipment
  • Manages operational expenditures of low-cost incidental items, such as network cables
  • Ensures equipment is in good working order by identifying the need for preventative maintenance and repairs, recommending and monitoring maintenance contracts
  • Works in cooperation with other college departments to provide a safe, clean VARLab environment
  • Initiates process and continual systems improvement actions aimed at enhanced VARLab efficiencies
  • Maintains awareness of vendor changes to IT VARLab infrastructure and recommends changes as required
  • Participates on committees relevant to VARLab/DLX
  • Promotes good public relations through contacts with personnel from other educational facilities, vendors as well as commercial sales representatives
  • Participates in program promotional activities related to prospective students
  • Coordinates/plans for tours and other special events for the VARLab on-campus and within the community
  • Recognizes the need for continuous self-growth and development and establishes goals for annual development activities
Qualifications:
  • Two-year Diploma in Information Technology or a related field is required
  • Minimum of three years practical experience in IT systems and network support in a customer-facing role
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal/technical skills in working with faculty, students, and others
  • Excellent customer services skills seen as an asset
  • Experience with AR/VR headset and mobile device support
  • Technical and organizational skills for planning activities in the VARLab
  • Possess a high level of initiative, self-motivation, and creativity to develop and maintain the VARLab as a relevant dynamic learning resource for college programs
  • Ability to work independently
  • Access to reliable transportation and ability to travel to multiple campus locations
