Over fifty years ago in 1965, we launched our department as an experiment in higher education. It was a cutting-edge communication arts undergraduate degree that integrated media-making, communication theory, and media history.

What was, at the time, an unusual interdisciplinary idea has grown to be a renowned forward-looking teaching and research unit, a bellwether for the future of communication studies and media training.

We are proud of our graduates, some 5200 strong, who have taken their training to positions in cultural organizations, media industries, and governmental policy contexts.

Our alumni have established themselves as influential media practitioners, cultural researchers, and scholars. And we continue to build our top-tier reputation with innovative courses and with a faculty of leading international scholars.

The strength, accessibility, and collegiality of our faculty, and the excellent team of administrative, technical and teaching staff, make the Department of Communication Studies an inspiring platform for both undergraduate and graduate pursuits.

Our undergraduate and graduate programs explore a diverse range of approaches to media analysis, critique, and creation. Our undergraduate media-making courses train students in moving image, intermedia, and sound production. Our special expertise includes cultural theory, critical race studies, feminist media studies, media and cultural history, and game studies.

Several research groups - among which are the Feminist Media Studio, Media History Research Centre, Intersectionality Hub, engAGE and newly established Access In the Making (AIM Lab) and Digital Intimacy, Gender and Sexuality (DIGS) Lab - maintain our status as a major hub of knowledge creation.
