What can I expect to do in this role?: The Ministry of the Solicitor General, the Ontario Provincial Police and Commander of Security Bureau seek a qualified person to provide 24-hour security for Ontario government buildings, its contents, parking garage and grounds, or those used by the Government of Ontario that are secured by the OPP including physical safety and security to its occupants and visitors.

This position is bilingual. French language verbal advanced skills are mandatory.

How do I qualify?:

Mandatory:

  • Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation.
  • Ability to attain and maintain Special Constable status.
  • Ability to pass OPP Psychological testing.
  • Ability to pass and maintain ongoing certification in Use of Force.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class G Driver's license, in good standing.
  • Ability to pass training in First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of relevant sections of federal and provincial legislation. Knowledge of relevant ministry policies, practical procedures (e.g., building fire, alarm and access system procedures), protocols, regulations and manuals to conduct patrols and security checks.
  • Problem solving skills in order to gather information on and assess potentially dangerous or volatile situations, and determine appropriate responses and actions given the circumstances and established procedures to resolve the issue or problem.
  • Skills to use computers for data entry, word processing and security operations functions.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate a range of equipment including emergency phone and radio, CCTV camera and other surveillance equipment.
  • Written communication skills to document incidents and prepare reports.
  • Oral communication skills to greet, escort and provide information and directions to building occupants and visitors including dignitaries, employees and the general public. In some instances, the nature of the communications can be contentious. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with protestors, uncooperative members of the public or disruptive individuals.
  • Interpersonal skills to intervene (during disturbances and other volatile situations), as well as to gather information, explain and exchange information with peers, emergency personnel (Fire, EMS), police officers and other Detachment personnel. Interpersonal skills to work in a team environment.
  • Judgement and discretion to work within established procedures. Decides on whether or not to deny a person entry to a building, to allow contractors access to sensitive areas when they may not have the proper clearances in place. Decides on course of action immediately and takes action in certain situations, i.e., emergency, sounding of duress alarms, in accordance with legislative requirements and policies and procedures.
