Position Summary


Reporting to the Director of Policy and Legal Affairs and with guidance provided by the Chiefs Committee on Employment, Economic Development and Income Security, the First Nations Clean Energy Coordinator will work and engage with AMC-member First Nations to develop and implement clean energy projects.

This position will be responsible for identifying clean energy opportunities within each region, promoting the impact of clean energy projects and developing a plan for First Nations in Manitoba to generate and distribute clean and reliable energy.


Key Responsibilities

  • Research and identify First Nations' best practices in clean energy, including:
Renewable energy, Energy efficiency and storage, next-generation clean energy, and technology based solutions.

  • Identify economic development opportunities for AMC member First Nations participation in the utility or clean energy sector.
  • Identify existing provincial and federal regulatory processes related to the generation and distribution of energy and consider options for First Nation processes.
  • Develop a regional approach to clean energy informed by the AMC's formal written position to the National Energy Board modernization process, reflected in the statement prepared by the Elders entitled _Ogichi Tibakonigaywin Kihche'othasowewin,

  • Identify clean energy opportunities for First Nations in Manitoba on and off reserve, including women and youth.
  • Develop new and strengthen existing clean energy networks and relationships with First Nation organizations, and government departments and entities to access information on a broad range of related environmental issues.
  • Responsible for ensuring the scheduling of meetings, recording of minutes, and monitoring of motions and resolutions of the Chiefs Committee on Employment, Economic Development and Income Security.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Environmental Studies, and/or a related equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial clean energy programs.
  • Knowledge of First Nation clean energy projects.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial regulations that affect the generation and transmission of clean energy for First Nations on and off reserve.
  • Knowledge of Manitoba Hydro.
  • Knowledge and interest in federal and provincial energy policy and carbon pricing initiatives.
  • Knowledge of First Nations' culture, history, Treaty and inherent rights.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, and of AMC member First Nations, and First Nations organizations in Manitoba.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide analytical support while managing multiple projects, and deadlines.
  • Experience in engaging First Nations and First Nations youth in Manitoba.
  • Experience in analysis and communicating technical information with a focus on nontechnical audiences.
  • Experience in developing local First Nation projects with the ability to create long
- and short-term plans based on First Nation input.

  • Must have presentation skills and excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Excellent ability to use computers.
  • Ability to analyze and/or prepare financial statements and budgets.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and travel as necessary.
  • Must be motivated and passionate about serving the First Nations of Manitoba.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team setting.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, and Clear Child Abuse Checks.
