The Safety Codes Council (Council) is an independent, self-funded regulatory organization mandated to provide oversight of the system and technical disciplines through a number of key legislated functions and client focused services.

The Regulatory Affairs Division supports the Council in aligning its activities to its legislated mandate and Alberta's safety codes system needs.

Developing and implementing policies that achieve desired safety system outcomes and mitigate risks.
Fostering transparent and effective communication channels that build trust and secure the Council's reputation.
Utilizing legal expertise to ensure compliance with legislation and administer a fair and efficient appeals system.

Reporting to the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, the Director of External Relations and Communications is responsible for the development and execution of the Council's external relations plans, strategies, tactics, and materials.

This position provides leadership and development to the internal Communications team and ensures consistency in the Council's voice and messaging to both internal and external audiences.

The Director of External Relations and Communications is a strategic advisor to the President and CEO and Executive Leadership Team.

As the Director of External Relations and Communications you possess a deep understanding of Alberta's political, legislative, and industry landscapes.

You excel at navigating complex networks effectively, fostering and cultivating relationships with diverse partners, including industry leaders, government representatives, communities, and external groups.

Exceptional interpersonal and networking skills, combined with a high level of professionalism and business acumen, are essential. Strong planning, organizational, financial management, and project management skills are crucial for success in this role.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must, along with the ability to lead cross-departmental activities and foster a positive and collaborative environment that supports the Council's growth.

Build and maintain strong relationships with an extensive network of relevant contacts within the safety codes sector, construction industry, and other relevant partner communities to ensure the Council remains apprised of all relevant updates, outcomes, and initiatives.

Craft and maintain the Council's voice and style, ensuring consistency across all communication channels to effectively convey the organization's identity and messaging to its target audience.

Provide project management leadership in collating, integrating, and synthesizing internal information from across the organization with relevant external information to ensure key communications products are delivered as required.

These include, but are not limited to, reports, key messages, letters, and recommendations.
Ensure all deliverables are completed on time while maintaining a high standard of quality.

Oversee the planning and execution of Council events that engage Council's industry members and broader safety codes system participants, ensuring the events are strategically positioned and reflect the Council's values and goals.

Demonstrate strong political acumen in monitoring and analyzing government announcements, as well as strategically relevant communications from other parties.

Provide leadership, direction, and oversight to the Communications team. This includes ensuring all employees are provided appropriate professional development support to enable their short- and long-term success.

Develop and execute year-to-year operational plans, multi-year business and strategic plans, and other deliverables required to support the short, medium, and long-term objectives of the Communications team and provides input into the development of the Council's strategic plans.

Work closely with the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, Manager, Policy, President and CEO, and others to proactively ensure that the Executive Leadership Team is apprised of any and all relevant activities and updates from government.

Support the overall Council culture and operations through active participation in projects, cross-functional teams and learning opportunities to meet the goals and objectives of the Council.

University degree in Business, Journalism, Communications, or equivalent.

8+ years of related experience, time spent working with elected officials, municipal or provincial governments, and/or in the construction industry would be considered an asset.

Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop effective partnerships with industry, all levels of government, communities, and other key external stakeholder groups.

Excellent interpersonal skills and networking skills, acting with a high level of professionalism and business acumen.
Excellent planning, organizational, financial management, and project management skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The (Council) is an independent regulatory body established in 1993 under the Act .

Accrediting and monitoring the compliance of municipalities, agencies, corporations, and regional service commissions in administering the Act within specified jurisdictions.

Training and certifying safety codes officers to inspect the construction, installation and maintenance of Alberta's structures and systems and administering Alberta's Master Electrician program.

Investigating complaints and conducting investigations on the conduct, performance, or competency of an organization or individual having authority, powers, or duties under the Act .
