POSITION OVERVIEW:

BGC Ottawa is currently hiring Neighbourhood Ambassador positions.

Reporting to the Manager of Outreach, as a Neighbourhood Ambassador you carry responsibilities for prevention, early intervention and community outreach services under the auspices of the City of Ottawa Neighbourhood Ambassador Program (NAP).


This position is normally scheduled for 12 hours per week, which involves working in designated communities primarily during evening (4-8 pm) /weekend hours.


SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Initiate, develop, and implement community outreach activities
  • Reach out and engage youth years of age) in activities that promote assets, competencies and resiliency
  • Listen to the opinions of youth, to understand their concerns and to learn what is important to them
  • Facilitate connections between youth and their neighbourhoods
  • Support youth developmental activities through leveraging municipal and community agency services
  • Provide youth with development opportunities in leadership training, volunteering and employment
  • Discuss COVID19 related safety in addition to conversing with youth how they are creatively adapting socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually
  • Work collaboratively with youth, parents and service providers to develop effective service delivery plans
  • Participate in the facilitation of partnerships with community agencies, businesses, government, and informal community groups to help foster programs
  • Perform administrative record keeping and reporting as required
  • Work with partners conducting Community Wellness Checks (OHT Outreach with OPH/CHC)
  • Regular evening/weekend hours of work

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • University degree/College diploma in Social Service related (preferred) or relevant lived experience
  • 12 years' experience in a youthrelated field, preferably in an outreach and/or community development role
  • Standard first aid/CPR certification

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILSS AND ABILITIES:

  • Valid Driver's License (preferred but not required)
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of youth in Ottawa
  • Understanding of needs of marginalized and/or racialized communities
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and negotiate effectively within a multidisciplinary team of service providers
  • Demonstrated youth mentoring skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills
  • Knowledge of computers/Internet/database management
