This position reports to the Chief Power Engineer and is located in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba (not available for remote work).

This position is responsible for carrying out class 2 power engineering responsibilities and assisting the Chief Engineer on the following maintenance systems: steam, refrigeration, compressed air, plant water, domestic water, fire suppression and natural gas.

The individual in this position must be fully capable of operating all Boiler/Refrigeration equipment, support systems, and capable of performing mechanical repairs in their areas of responsibility.

Key Accountabilities

Safety

  • Accountable for the safety of the plant operations and promptly identifying and addressing unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Assist in the development of energy control procedures and safe work practices.
  • Accountable for timely and complete investigations, remedying safety concerns, educating employee on hazards and risk mitigation.
  • Ensure effective safety meetings and toolbox talks, with involvement from employees and sharing of relevant information to keep employees safe.

Operations

  • Assist the Chief Engineer by providing full support to Process Engineers, Shift Supervisors, Head of Quality, Head of Engineering and Maintenance, and other production personnel to reach production targets (KPIs).
  • Assist with department cross-training and provide back-up to the Chief Engineer when on leave (vacation or sick)
  • Responsible to act in the absence of utility operators for operations, maintenance & control of high-pressure boilers, and ancillary equipment.
  • Conducts inspections on the fire sprinkler system as required.
  • Maintain accurate logs of all monitored equipment.
  • Ensures effective training of new Boiler/Refrigeration Operators/Water treatment/Wastewater.
  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance & control of Chiller equipment – Refrigerated Glycol.
  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance & control of low and high pressure steam systems
  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance & control of environmental control equipment- Potable water production and wastewater monitoring.
  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance & control of equipment to support various production units including turbines, pumps, compressors, turbo-alternators, cooling towers, water treatment systems, gas systems.
  • Participate in the issuance of Confined Space Entry Permits.
  • Performs assigned responsibilities during plant evacuations due to fire and gas.
  • Required to fully understand the purpose and operation of the Boiler/Refrigeration/potable water production/wastewater monitoring system and have the ability to make decisions based on sound judgment when a situation dictates.
  • Accountable for troubleshooting Boiler failures/Water production/Wastewater compliance, determining work around and reporting deficiencies, problems to Head of Maintenance.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and functional condition.
  • Attendance and participation in training activities appropriate to the position and incorporates acquired skills and knowledge.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Engineer

Quality

  • Responsible to take action / adjust variables to meet quality and productivity standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all HACCP procedures – Food grade water, steam and refrigerated fluid in chiller.

Specificities

  • Understand and respect the rules concerning employee safety, quality, hygiene and the environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the Roquette Pea processing plant and its operations.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and productive work relationships with utilities operators, maintenance team, operators, and shift supervisors.
  • Must be available to do extended hours (evenings and weekends) based on production and maintenance needs. Being 'on call' is a mandatory requirement for this job. Candidate needs to be able to provide off shift support.
  • Able to work under extreme conditions, such as hot, wet and cold environments; inside and outside of the Plant.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, catwalks and able to work at heights and inside confined spaces.
  • Able to use personal protective equipment, such as respirators, SCBA, and safety harness.

Technical Applicative competencies

  • Good analytical skills and ability to look for technical solutions to all process related problems.
  • Must be able to use written logbooks, the plant computer system and the maintenance work order and supply system.
  • Able to read and interpret written instructions, manufacturers' manuals, material safety data sheets, and engineering drawings.

Education

  • Must hold a valid Class 2 Power Engineer license.

Experience:

  • 5 – 7 years' experience working in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in operating large Utilities facilities (power distribution, steam generation, vacuum systems, chiller systems, compressed air systems, water treatment and distribution systems, Wastewater monitoring).
  • In depth knowledge and experience in troubleshooting.
  • Control room experience – monitor complex processes and coordinate critical activities
  • Maintenance experience – prioritize assets maintenance to ensure plant reliability
