Position Overview

Reporting to the Manger, Environment Reporting and Permitting, and working closely with other environmental professionals at both the Calgary office and Ekati site, the Senior Environment Advisor – Fisheries and Aquatics is responsible for leading the fisheries and aquatics components of environmental compliance and monitoring at the Ekati Diamond Mine. Duties include managing technical work and providing regulatory, permitting, and technical advice. The successful candidate will be required to work a Monday to Friday (5x2) schedule at the Yellowknife Office, with regular travel to the Ekati mine site, Indigenous communities, and general travel as dictated by business needs.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

• Lead the development, evaluation, and refinement of fisheries and aquatics programs in accordance with regulatory requirements (e.g., Water Licence, Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program, Fisheries Act Authorizations), business objectives, stakeholder engagement, and Burgundy's Sustainable Development Policy;

• Lead the acquisition and compliance of fisheries and aquatics related regulatory approvals and permits;

• Ensure fisheries and aquatics programs conform to short- and long-term program requirements and goals;

• Manage technical consultants, including the development and execution of field and office-based scopes of work;

• Support field and office-based work associated with baseline, environmental effects, and Fisheries Authorization monitoring;

• Review consultant developed technical reports on baseline studies, annual monitoring programs, special studies, and

Fisheries Authorizations;


• Manage and report on project deadlines, completion, and budgets;

• Support mining operations through the provision of technical and regulatory guidance;

• Support regulatory approvals for new developments and changes to existing developments;

• Develop and maintain work procedures, health and safety procedures, and risk assessments for fisheries and aquatics programs;

• Ensure effective community and regulatory engagement on fisheries and aquatics programs;

• Present monitoring and study findings to regulators and stakeholders;

Education/Experience

• Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in biology with specialization in fisheries or aquatic biology.

• Maintaining a professional designation, as P.Biol., R.P.Bio, or equivalent.

• Master's Degree would be considered an asset.

• 10+ years of directly related technical and/or project execution experience.

• Knowledge of fisheries and aquatics regulations and monitoring and analytical techniques.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in the mining industry, experience working in northern Canada, an understanding of the northern regulatory environment, experience with fisheries compliance, and experience with the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations.

The successful candidate will have strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to prioritize competing demands and effectively manage a wide variety of activities while meeting established deadlines. The successful candidate will be able to work independently on projects from conception to completion and to work collaboratively and interact respectfully with people from internal departments and external organizations.

Additional Information
